HOW TO: GM 3.8 WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT – 2005 Grand Prix GT

Today we replace the water pump in my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. This isnt the supercharged GTP but it should be basically the same, just an extra belt. This should work on all buick, oldsmobile or other GM 3.8L engines.

Yeah after taking the power steering pump off it's hard to line if back up I spent hours but video was helpful

Rough Boy Garage says:

Add thread sealant to the 4 13mm water pump bolts. They go into coolant passages in the block.

Ha ya answered my question thanks bro I got everything off but that ladt bolt under the pulley I was like what the f*** how do I get this off because I knew that bolt was a mile along just like the others thank you for sharing that information almost bolts for holding it to the engine because I could not see where it was connected lol

Donnie Brite Jr says:

Luckily the one in working on is locked up lol no screwdriver needed how in the hell did you get that off without removing the rear bottom pulley that's pressed onto the pump with the reservoir and s*** because I can't get that completely off there without happily being in the way I'm just curious how you did that because that step wasn't shown

Dallas Bearclaw says:

Did you drain your radiator fluid?

Lando Thompson says:

Did he use any sealant ?

Bam Bam says:

Did you have to drain the radiator 1st?
Do you need gasket sealer?

Jason Hopper says:

I found it useful to also remove the electrical box there, and also the battery so the electrical box could be folded out of the way. Other than that, thanks for the guidance!

I have a question. The water pump pulley doesn't rotate at all. Should I change the pulley or pump? Or both?

Tracy Proctor says:

Appreciate ya work

Josh Berna says:

How did you know that the old water pump was bad?

Greg Palafos says:

A good tip is when you take out the old bolts slide them into the new pump before installing it then take a photo of the pattern then install your pump and follow the bolt pattern you can buy a cheap strap wrench for Lowe's or Home Depot to help with the pulley or use the screwdriver technique and visually check the belt for any cracks or tears
