Thank you for making this video, It made replacing the faulty motors real easy knowing the procedure including marking the needle positions. I found the motors here on Ebay. Do a search for “GM X25168 Stepper Motors” and you will find replacements.

The fork treatment worked really well at pulling out 3 of 4 of my stepper motor shafts. Now my cluster is lighted very well with my new soldered in bulbs. But the gauges with the shafts pulled out are junk. What fun! I dont know how you can prevent the shafts from coming loose. Use at your own risk…you been warned! 32 year tech

No. You are only changing the drive motors for the needles. Not the odo drive.

When this first happened I just pushed my speedometer and oil pressure needles back and resintalled the guages, of course they went haywire again. My question is, will that affect my calibration? Will my indexing be accruate if I replace the stepper motors and remove the needles? Also my speedometer stops around 80mph, so when I index i would install at the 12oclock position and then spin it counterclockwise back to around 80?

Most of the clusters I’ve seen require removing the needles in order to disassemble the unit and access the internals. No worries, indexing the needles is a breeze and only takes a few minutes.

I was wondering if you are just removing the cluster to try and resolder/fix the odometer, not replace stepper motor, and don’t plan on messing w/gauges/needles do I need to mark the needles?

Yes, they are interchangeable.

It’s fine to rotate clockwise, but I never have more that a quarter turn or so. When you’re indexing counter-clockwise is the most critical part.

Hi I was wondering what tool, scan tool, or power generator do you use to bench test all of the gauges to see if they all work while the cluster is not connected to the vehicle? Thank you for your help and great video.

i’ve adjusted my gas gage while the power was on because i didn’t like where the factory ‘full’ stop point was. really the only way to accurately calibrate these would be to have another device measuring realtime while you are making your adjustments.
close to stock settings at warm idle:
RPM 600-700~
Speed 0 🙂
temp 210 (depending on thermostat)
oil pressure 45-50?
battery – could use a meter to adjust
fuel – fill it up then adjust

no easy solution unfortunately, rotate counterclockwise

this could get a bit complicated depending on how picky you are. really at this point all of the gages need to be calibrated. if you have some sort of handheld diagnostic tool, you can measure real time parameters such as rpm, temp, speed, etc. if not, then you’ll be playing a guessing game. you can put the cluster back in without the plastic faceplate to make on the fly adjustments. you can download a speedo app for free which will give you a good speed reading.

Question, lets say, only the battery gauge is broken. after replacing the stepper motor for the battery gauge. I put back the needles in all of the other gauges, do i put it back in 12 oclock position? or just the battery gauge needle? The rest in the old position as marked with a tape?

Solder wick would probably be easier/cheaper. Put some resin on the wick or solder join, put the wick on the solder joint, then the heated iron on the wick. This method just absorbs the existing solder into the wick…easy and cheap. Good luck
