GM Ground Strap Replacement: Truck Applications
In this video, we’re replacing the ground strap on a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche.
There are tips in this video that may help you, mainly focused on accessing the cable with ease, and how to reconnect it in it’s proper location.
The purpose of this video is to show you the ground strap location, and what components should be removed in order to successfully complete the task.
Symptoms of a bad engine ground may include:
Dim lights
Flickering lights
Electrical devices working erratically
Faulty fuel pump
Slipping or burned out AC compressor clutch
Intermittent failure of sensors
Damaged throttle or transmission cables
Hard starting
No-starting
Dead battery
Introduce radio noise
Ignition coil failure
PRO TIP: There is literally not much room between the engine and firewall in order to access the cable. Practicing patience will go a long way with this one. Good luck!

I have a 2010 silverado 5.3 what size are the nut and bolt for the graund strap
is there any reason the ground strap couldn't be moved to the cylinder head?
Does the ground strap have to be bolted to the original spot behind the intake, or can you bolt it to an easier location and have it work correctly? I will never be able to get my hand back there.
Would have been 1 of the best go to videos for this fix,but you didn't show how you took it off,or put it back, what socket, nothing?
I just had to get back there and redo mine, because I just put the ls back in the truck #operationls
Where does the ground strap go to in the engine bay? I see the wire disappears behind the engine bay but you did not show where. Would love to see a video about this because it seems like a damned mystery. I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe.
I have a 2001 gmc Sonoma and if your standing in front of the engine it’s located on the back left side by firewall , where does this ground strap connect to ?? The engine or what ??
How long is the strap
Get the double box end S curve wrenches from harbor freight. They’re the icon ones. They work very easily.
I have a ground strap going to the hood on my 2006 Sierra. The nut apparently fell off and the strap is just dangling. Any idea what size nut that would be?
Thanks yeah that bolt is a bit*** I’ll try zip tie and bracket mount. Evap tube. 15 mm wrench is what I used took me while to figure that one out.
Can’t hear shit
if that bolt is broken can i connect the ground to the bolt behind the engine ?
This video definitely helps but also this spot is so tight. I haven't been successful in reaching and changing it. any tips/tricks would be nice, I know he mention having that 15mm deep socket and a long shaft wrench combo. maybe not having that is hindering me.
