64-72 charging system wire up using GM 3 wire internally regulated alternator

64-72 charging system wire up using GM 3 wire internally regulated alternator

IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE HOOKING THE ALTERNATOR UP I JUST UPLOADED A VIDEO EXPLAINING HOW TO DO IT, SORRY I GOT A LITTLE AHEAD OF MYSELF IN THIS VIDEO

IF CAR WONT SHUT OFF TRY PUTTING THE #1 WIRE ON ALTERNATOR TO THE ACCESSORIES ON THE KEY SWITCH…

or run #1 wire with a radio shack rectifier diode $3 at radio shack pointing towards the alt

THIS IS HOW THE ALT IS HOOKED UP TO A GM VEHICLE… ALL IM DOING IS SHOWING YOU HOW TO WIRE UP THE ALT.. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS DIFFERENT ON YOUR SET UP, BUT THIS SHOULD GIVE YOU AN IDEA ON HOW THE ALTERNATOR IS WIRED……because im assuming not everyone is putting these on ONLY GM cars now

A POINTS IGNITION OR ANY TYPE OF IGNITION COIL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ALTERNATOR HOOKUP

YOU DO HAVE A WIRE RAN OFF OF THE STARTER SOLENOID ON “I” or “R” position to the positive side of the COIL ON GM POINTS TYPE IGNITIONS THAT ARE ALL 6V…(ford may wire them opposite) .(they will use a resisted wire or WHITE ballast resistor on 12 volt systems…) but this has nothing to do with the alternator.. that is giving 12v to the coil when starting the engine.

YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE THE DUMMY LIGHT WITH A DIODE POINTING TOWARDS THE BATTERY

just an idea on how to hook a GM 3 wire internally regulated alternator up

alternator is a 79 mote carlo 305 from oreilly auto parts

Nice video but how do I also wire the coil and resistor?

I'm more confused now than ever

The background music is terrible man!

Excellent , well done

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Good job!

Where is the Juction box coming from or to Alternator,where is it located on a chevy S-10-,mine NOT charging was intermittent at first now not charging at all ,probably not getting voltage to the Excitor coil ??

I have a 69 397 that I fought with a starter. This helps tremendously

Question about the 194 dummy light, you said it's to be wired hot off key to #1 terminal to excite the alternator, then it will cut off. What causes it to do that?

@DennisKenneybees says:

I purchased an Allis Chalmers 5040 diesel tractor that has a burned up chopped up wiring harness. The tractor originally came with a generator which someone changed over to an alternator system. This is probably how the wiring harness got burned up. I'm replacing the harness but the wire that is supposed to go to the indicator light from the alternator R/1 post and then to the ignition ON terminal is the problem. The Gen light on the dash that the indicator light wire goes to, only has one wire to the light. The base of the light is grounded to the frame so there is no way to go from the light to the ignition ON terminal. I guess I have to ignore the gen light in the instrument panel and install a new two wire indicator light? What do you think?

Excellent video. Helping a friend with his 1986 C10. Thanks

@RogerChristian-i7q says:

Is the 194 dummy light a regular bulb or led

How would you add a push button to start while still using the key switch to access accessory and initiate the on position on a 89' Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck

Thank you teacher

@rosemcbirney5123 says:

Is number 1 also known as the stater wire

@SharonWhite-z4n says:

Really helpful video, thank you.
I have a GM 5 ltr V8 in my boat, I fitted a new alternator and the pulley wheel get very hot after 30 seconds of running. The belt tension & alignment is good…
Could it be a wiring problem ?
Thanks again from the UK.

Watching these videos over and over, and can't seem to grasp where I wire the aftermarket ammeter.
Please excuse my simple mindedness, and help.

@Theundisputedtruth says:

So where is the dummy light normally ?!

@jthetunes1 says:

I know this an older video but I have a feeling its about to save me a whole lot of pain. The only question I have is can the dummy light be any old light or is it a specific type of light? Huge thanks for this video also!!

@tomference4618 says:

My confusion comes from a numerous terminal ignition switch as opposed to your simple three terminal switch.

@tomference4618 says:

Ok,..I should have been sharper! I think I understand your illustration.
Not sure I understand connecting to power and then into #1 on the alternator to complete the circuit.

@tomference4618 says:

Can you tell me how to connect the warning light from #1 of the alternator?
