Simple how-to: Replace Ford Focus PCV valve & hose, blown rocker gasket #1

Simple how-to: Replace Ford Focus PCV valve & hose, blown rocker gasket #1

Easy DIY how to: fixing a collapsing PCV hose on 2L 16V Zetec engines, a common Focus Mk1 problem, and replacing the PCV valve to ensure all possible related issues eliminated. These problems were identified after a rocker (valve) cover gasket blew, creating a major oil leak – failure of the PCV system can lead to increased crankcase pressure and so is a possible candidate cause.

The follow-up video details the fixing of the symptom by replacing the rocker cover gasket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_W6fymfo6U

You will need:

Excellent video Craig. Saved my bacon again! I was just about to change rocker gasket as per your vid and noticed the pcv hose is knackered!
I have a 2005 mk2 1.6 petrol – am i right in thinking the pcv hose is at the front of the engine, hidden away under inlet manifold and the hose itself is a lot shorter than on the mk1?

Excellent video and explanation
Thanks Craig

Great video, have a Mondeo 2.0 estate (1998) that I use on occasion an it has this collapsing PCV hose in exactly the same fashion. Also the car will maintain approx. 2000 RPM when moving, even when clutch depressed, this only returns to normal idle when the car actually comes to a stop. Not sure if connected but every little helps, some would say..

steve says:

really well done video part by part shown as it should i will be changing myn tommorow as myn was exactly the same problem and same leaking place must be prome on these cars as well as the focus st170 thank you really help now i have no worries to change keep up these vide steve

When idles no jerks ….Do you suspect something else ? Thanks in advance

Great video! What year is your Focus? Or does it matter what year? I have the 2003 zx3 zetec 2.0L engine. I don't stall but it idles rough vibrating at 800 RPM's computer setting, I rev to 1000 RPM's and it is smooth as silk. Acceleration is powerful.. Throttle body clean and IAC valve clean. No mechanic has any idea how to fix it. When I turn a/c on it vibrates even more. but that could just be the compressor.. Rough vibrating idle. Some you tubers say it is most likely the pcv and a pcv hose. I wonder? No head gasket oil leak, and no stalling. Plugs misfire here and there at idle. HUM? If only I could raise the idle manual;ly to 1000 but I have heard that is going to mess with the computer. Anyone with suggestion? Please Post. I am running out of ideas.

I smell gas in this hose and see a bit of it ? Normal ?

Sean Cook says:

Craig, do you know if the hose fits the svt focus? I've got an 03 SVTF and this hose definitely needs to be replaced, just wondering if it's the same part?

Most clear tutorial I've ever watched, both video and audio! Thanks was a pleasure to watch!

If you have the Mk2 Focus, or any other car with the later Ford Duratec / Mazda L engines, see this video instead as it's a bit more involved: https://youtu.be/-TR4pZdXZpg

WMC NA says:

I had the same collapsed hose on my focus. The car drove just fine but would idle really low and wanted to kill at stop signs. I cut the elbow, attached a new elbow at the end with a plastic "hose coupler". Idles/runs great now 🙂 NOTE!!! This is a factory molded hose with one end wider than the other so get a plastic connector that has 2 different sizes on each end. If that nmakes any sense 😛

Chris King says:

Thank you this fixed my problem. When I would accelerate the car would lose power for about five seconds and stop oil leak as well good stuff

btw 1.6 fits on the 2.0

Alexis Cruz says:

Excellent tutorial, the way you explained relaxed me, have a nice day!

Motor City Man says:

You're lucky you don't have the Focus 2.0 Duratec motor.
I just had my hose replaced and the intake manifold has to come off to get to it……$450.00!!!
BUT…on the bright side my motor has a timing chain and not a stupid BELT, so I don't have to pay to replace the belt!!

dynamisdk says:

Great video, clearest details I've found and I managed a quick replacement without too much struggle. Also extra thanks for listing the part numbers – very helpful

Just changed the hose and valve myself, and I'd recommend that if you're going to do the same you be careful with the grommet the valve fits into. If you go to Ford they'll tell you that you can't get it by itself, it only comes as part of whatever the thing it fits into is, (Oil separator?) which is a $500 part. You can find out separately online, but it will cost you at least $20-30. I found one that kinda fit and made it work, but my advice would be to not mess with it unless it's obviously fragged.

Mike Moren says:

I went to replace my PCV hoses and valve today but saw that the PCV valve grommet had some cracks in it.  Thought I could drive down to any one of three national chain auto parts stores within 5 blocks of my home and pick one up, but no one carries the grommet.  RockAuto doesn't even carry the grommet.  I hope Ford does!  Once again, great video!  I just watched your video #2 – valve cover gasket replacement – and it was also very well done.  I really appreciate your videos!

Tip remove the airbox 😉

jeewan pabla says:

Hi my car has a same problem. Can you tell me how much cost of this? And where from you ?

David Evans says:

Thanks Craig. Oh fine. Yes I have no problem doing that. Was just such a difference!! I might buy rubber in NZ, as has totally failed, and install that now. Ill clean valve while awaiting new one. Thanks again. David

David Evans says:

Hi Craig, it appears you are in NZ like me. Where the heck did you get Motorcraft Pcv valve at $25. John Andrews Ford just told me $157?? Rear hose $35…OK

David Evans says:

One of best car repair videos I've seen!! Well filmed and very well explained. Thanks Craig.
