What you should know about this type of Ford starter? It is frequently referred to as a
“shunt starter”. Unlike conventional starters, these use a portion of available battery
current to create a magnetic force capable of closing a movable pole shoe. This is in
addition to the current required to drive the motor. Because of these additional current
requirements, all aspects of the vehicles starting circuit must be in optimal condition!
Even marginally diminished current supply will result in a slow labored crank that will
eventually damage the starter.

For this type of starter, the remote mounted solenoid is frequently the issue (as opposed to the
starter motor). The solenoids are usually mounted on the firewall and should always
be checked/replaced before replacing the starter motor.
