With my explorer (1993), when I shift it does not lock into gear, could it
be the transmission? It worked fine until my mother pulled the steering
wheel way to hard.

Just replaced the shift tube on my ’92 F150, which had broken in half. The
tube with the bushings included, as well as the bushings alone, were in
stock at both O’Reilly’s and Advance locally for pretty cheap. Figured it
would be a dealer only part when I got into it. The shifter had been mushy
for awhile before going out completely.

I had my upper bushing out of place like that. What I did was put a hose
clamp on there to hold it in place. Didn’t even have to replace the
bushing
