Also, a simple way to see if the thermostat needs to be replaced is to boil it on your stove and use a meat thermometer to see what temperature it opens at. If it opens at the correct temperature you have a different problem.

I used to have a 94 GMC Sierra 4.3L V6. Took under 5 minutes to replace thermostat, right at the top of the engine. Didn’t even need to drain the coolant.
Sheesh you can do it in about 5 minutes on a Small Block Chevy
This was my first time doing this. I had no help. With this video, you should be able to do it in less than 2 hours. It took me 4 because I wasn’t exactly sure how to do it, just that it was hard to get to.

Honestly I don’t remember now. I don’t think it was much cause it is closer to the top of the engine but a one gallon bucket should be plenty for that part.
