THANKS BRO

Matthew Pepek says:

you didnt show how to align them, that’s the most absolute crucial part. If
they aren’t aligned you can literally break the top half to engine, valves
pistons, etc.

Emmanuel Valles says:

You saved me $320 !!! i was gonna get the power steering pump replaced
because i thought that it was the pump that made that noise. but then i saw
this video and replaced my idler pulley and it fixed the noise. THANK YOU
SOO MUCH!

iaintneverscared1 says:

Really appreciate this vid. I have the same problem right now. Makes the
rattling noise at idle but not during acceleration. Kinda sounds almost
like a blower at idle. Again thanks for the help and I’m definetly
subscribing to your channel

6speeddakota . says:

A groan/whine noise can be from the power steering pump, make sure you have
adequate fluid. Other culprits are likely the alternator front bearing
going bad, or the water pump main bearings. Check your power steering
fluid, make sure the level is good, loosen the belt and spin both the
alternator and the water pump, make sure the water pump pulley doesn’t have
any play in it, the pulleys should spin smoothly and quietly, if they are
noisy or gritty, that accessory is likely your problem

Jerry Loco says:

Was it making noise before you replaced the pulley?

6speeddakota . says:

@wandererxyz First make sure that the pulley doesn’t rock back and forth
when it is on the stud, because the stud on the timing cover could be worn
out. I got mine at Lordco Auto Parts in Delta BC, it is a Dayco, I have had
no trouble with them. make sure the tensioner and respective pulley isn’t
toast either, try putting a light coat of grease on the stud as well, that
might last longer than just some oil

jw200 says:

@6speeddakota Thanks for reply. Well it seems that high humidity caused
this. Now it’s colder here, few degrees below 0 and the noise is gone.
Should i still be worried?

6speeddakota . says:

@rstrom1061 if the noise occurs only when the vehicle is moving, then it
could be the speedometer cable is rattling inside the plastic sheath, or it
could be something just rattling underneath the dash. Another common thing
is if you have a bad relay or connection to a relay, it could make a very
high pitched buzzing sound from clicking on and off very quickly

caushooter23 says:

Hey 6speed when you say common problem what exactly happens besides the
belt snapping and shredding are there any other signs to let you know that
the idler pulley is going bad? I have the same year grand marquis with 102,
000 k on it. I heard a whining noise and it last about a couple of minutes
and I didnt know if its the tensioner pulley or the idler I was in idle when

wheely132 says:

Seem like the idler pulley on my 99 Crown Victoria with 4.6L lasted a long
time, it has 171k miles now and it just started making noise like a week
ago.

Richard Stromberg says:

Hello, I have a 1992 Chevy Silverado pickup with 92,000 miles on it. It run
like new but latley I hear a buzzing like noise behind the speedometer. I
took the speedometer cluster out thinking it was it, but it is not. What do
you think it could be. Rstrom1061@aol.com Thanks Rich

6speeddakota . says:

@jw200 that’s weird, because usually the colder weather will make the
rubber harder and make slipping more likely. I wouldn’t worry about it if
the belt looks like its in good shape and has decent tension, just keep an
eye/ear out for anything abnormal.

stang power says:

so do you lose power by the pulley not working right? mines making a lil
noise and i noticed the belt jumped a lil and touched the block leaving a
mark i guess on a clutch dump?

6speeddakota . says:

this is a grand marquis, I’m not sure if it is routed differently between
cars models or between the car block and the truck block, if you’re hearing
a whining noise like supercharger, (if that’s what you meant by blower)
then check the alternator main bearing, they make that characteristic
whine, also ford power steering pumps are noisy, make sure you have enough
fluid in the pump

David Kosh says:

Replaced them bot, still making noise. Rats!

devilmaycry9411 says:

thanks u just saved my car

Honda EKNine says:

i just replaced this right now on my moms car like 10 minutes ago. just
take the serpintine belt off. the cars have a diagram, and it was a 15mm
socket and a 3/8 driver. not a 13mm and a 1/2.but the explorer was making a
LOUUUUUUDDDDD squeel. it stoped after i changed this.

6speeddakota . says:

The car should have 7: Crank, water pump, AC compressor, alternator, power
steering, idler, and tensioner. Yours may have 6 if you don’t have AC, or
you don’t count the crank pulley.

Jean-Marc Ayotte says:

Just a tips for everyone rockauto.com selling those pulley from 7$ so

6speeddakota . says:

This one wasn’t making noise yet, but considering how loose the pulley was,
it wouldn’t be long until it started making noise.

Leslie Long says:

Great informative & simple

iaintneverscared1 says:

Ok scratch that, lol. I went outside to check on my pulleys for play and the
all accually where good. And come to find out that my belt is routed
different than the one from your vid. So now my question is its probably my
tensioner then??

6speeddakota . says:

@koshdman what kind of noise? Because a worn out pulley bearing will make a
rattling noise. A whine will typically be a power steering pump, make sure
there is enough fluid and that it is in good condition, and a groan could
be a bad water pump or fan clutch. Try removing the belt and then starting
the engine, if the noise goes away it’s in the accessory drive. check all
pulleys for smooth operation, if one is gritty or sloppy, then chances are
that you’ve found the problem. good luck!

caushooter23 says:

I meant park when the whining started sorry for two posts.

gpz1100z1 says:

Thanks man. Just saved me some cash!

jw200 says:

Can this pulley cause chirping/squealing noise? I have such noise coming
from the place where all the belts are. But i don’t know exactly what
causes the noise. Warming the engine up, doesn’t help. There is still
noise. Pretty loud

Fred Kemper says:

I have a 1992 Lincoln Town Car and it makes a chirping noise when it is in
drive or reverse.,Is that one of the pulleys?

6speeddakota . says:

@jw200 I don’t think so, make sure your belt is in good shape, look at the
ribs on the belt, if they are all cracked, then the belt needs to be
replaced, also make sure that the belt has decent tension, if not, the
tensioner spring might be weak and the whole thing should be replaced, a
chirping or squealing noise is the belt slipping most likely, but it
doesn’t hurt to check the idler and tensioner pulleys as well

frankpaul3204 says:

Bumping the engine was the wrong thing to do. If the belt wasn’t aligned
correctly you could cause serious damage. You should have rotated the
engine with a breaker bar to check proper belt alignment.

Travis Johnson says:

how many pulleys did that car have? Working on the exact same car but motor
only have six pulleys?

6speeddakota . says:

You can, but you don’t have to. If the tensioner pulley has looseness to
it, then definitely replace it.

Vickolikestocook says:

Thank you very much for this video. It was very helpful

wandererxyz says:

I have a 1999 Grand Marquis and the engine idler makes noise. I replaced
with a new one but the noise still there. I know it is the engine idler
that makes the noise. Because I oiled the old one and put it back and the
noise went away for a while till the oil dried out. Can you tell me where
did you get your replace engine idler? And, what brand it is? Thanks.

wandererxyz says:

Thanks for your speedy response. I looked the belt/pulley area again and
found that the tensioner pulley is loose too. I oiled the tensioner pulley
and it is quiet right know. However, I think this is just a temporary fix.
Can you tell me if the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley are using the
same part? And, can I just replace the tensioner pulley or I’ll have to
replace the whole tensioner assembly? Thanks.
