How to Repair a Ford Odometer Digital Display

How to Repair a Ford Odometer Digital Display

This video demonstrates the repair of a Ford odometer that was intermittently working. This repair was performed on a 2003 Ford F-150 pick-up truck but the process should be similar on other Ford truck and SUV models of the late 90’s through early-mid 2000’s.

The odometer display on this vehicle was going through cycles of functioning and not functioning. It turns out this is a common problem on these types of vehicles. The culprit is a bad solder connection that simply needs to be re-soldered. This video shows how to disassemble the dash, remove the instrument panel, and how to solder faulty connection to fix the odometer display.

I tried hitting all the solder joints I could on my 2008 Taurus SEL and pretty much no change to the LED read out except it went from black to the horizontal orange lines off and on. But I have a completely different looking instrument cluster and LED readout. And none of the original solder looked bad. And there are a lot of items under the LED Module that I can't get to. Might just buy a new lower mileage one off ebay and hope it works for the rest of the time I keep this car. I'm surprised there is no way to read the cars milage except from theses message centers. I asked several mechanic's if their engine analysis units could and most say no. It seems to be totally locked into the instrument cluster. That just seems weird to me.

Bob Emery says:

Worked perfectly. Took 2 hours to remove and replace and five minutes or less to solder. Both outside pins had cracked solder. I would recommend you pay close attention to how the shift indicator comes out for reassembly. I would also recommend a flex screwdriver for the socket. My problem was intermittent. Worked when cold and then would turn off. I live in Denver, and I was always nervous the odometer wouldn't come on for the emissions test. Thank You Very Much!

How much should i be being charged to get this done so I can Know I'm not being charged

Joe Pah says:

Man i have to do this to sell my truck.. Problem is i'll probably break some brittle piece along the way and start another project!

Jonathan Philmore says:

Wow! That's crazy at how simple that was. I wonder how much would a mechanic charge to fix that?

Adan Gonzalez says:

what is that green part behind the cluster called ??

Kevin Thompson says:

Extremely helpful. Question though. Should I be grounded with some sort of anti-static discharge tether before handling the circuit board? Wouldn't want my 70's throw-back Afro kicking out 20,000 volts of static. (lol)

Agorgor Morthum says:

thanks so much, now i can see all display

Awesome Thanks

Hi, I just purchased a 97 Ford Expedition and the speedometer is not working. It reads 128856, however it did read 124500 on an inspection report just Sept. 2016 so it just stopped working recently. What do you think the cause could be?

William Crider says:

Hey Joe, Enjoyed your instructions on how to fix the odometer on my 2000 F150. I did this and it worked very well. Now my odometer works great. Was going to cost over 300.00 to get someone to fix this. Guess I will pay myself, haha. Thanks again for the step by steps instructions. William, from Tennessee.

Hi I have a ford transit 2005 model and there is no odometer showing in the dash :/ when we bought the van is had anther external meter (simens VDO) that was connected with the van. It is just like a meter used to pass from border to border and it had the mileage stored in it. Now this meter has stopped working and it is like sealed so I cannot open it. My question still remains why this van does not indicate the original mileage on its dash ? maybe you can help me out please ?

Hello, my 2010 ford crown Victoria has the same problem and after watching this video I might just fix it by myself, I do have one question though, what kind of soldering wire did you use in that video?

Jim Gearheart says:

I have a 2002 F-150 that's had an intermittent issue for years, then it finally quit all together this year.  This fix worked as advertised and it only took 1 hour!  Thanks for the video!!

Did mine today. Thanks works perfect

Thanks so much! This is the only video I found like this. I've to a 2003 Ford F150 XLT Lariet and the odometer indicator lights up intermittently. More OFF than ON as time goes by. I had to go a little deeper; to the indicator with ribbon cable. My problem seems to be in the ribbon cable or connector. I moved everything around until I think I got it working, but only tomorrow will tell. Once I removed it from the board, I took a closeup photo with the Ford part number on the indicator with connector so I can research the availability and price of another if the problem persists. Thanks for your video. It gave me the courage to tackle this project on Labor Day morning.

Sir your video is awesome. My odometer is now working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shoot2killify says:

took me about 10 minutes after getting the cluster out. super easy to do. next up is replacing the shift indicator and cable.

I just used your great video to fix this problem on my 2001 Ford pickup.  Took about 2 hours.  Thanks so much!

Muhammad thall says:

What will happen if i replace the whole cluster from another car same model will the odometer reading be of the old car?? Or will it not work??

derek c says:

had the same issue same truck mind was beyond cracked. the pin basically lost all connection. would this cause my read out to be all dashes? I had the problem where I had all dashes and my truck would not start. a light tap or sometimes a hard pound on the dash and a key cycle would get the numbers to reregister and then the truck will start and run fine. I was wondering if you had any information on this?

Patrick Brandon says:

Great video. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to do this. Just one quick question. What watt soldering iron did you use? I will try this fix after I return from a little camping trip.

Barry Gregg says:

Thank you. Very nicely done and it helped a lot. The only thing I needed to get from someplace else is how to disconnect the gear shift display. My odometer was intermittent so I'm hoping this will have fixed the problem for good. I only touched the one solder point that you mention instead of doing them all like another video suggested. I understand doing them all while in there after all the work getting it undone, but I didn't want to touch anything more than I had to, so I went with your one point. Hopefully, I won't have to go in again. The hardest part for me was getting the plugs undone from behind the console. I also scratched my dash trying to get out the light switch panel, but that's partially due to my truck being so old (2002) that I think it just scratched easily – took off the gray overlay/plastic. They don't put much quality into a lot of this plastic stuff. Anyway, thanks, I'm crossing my fingers that this works, but I won't know for a few weeks if it consistently displays.

Jerry Leighton says:

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I have been fixing a few electrical gremlins in my brother-in-law's 2003 F150. Now I can cross the "ghost" odometer reading off of the list as I just fixed it thanks to you 🙂

Mike R says:

I have a 97 F150 , it's not digital, no idea how to fix it..

Naomi Melendez says:

Thanks. This suggested work on my 2001 Ford 150. Took me an 1.5 hr and likely saved me 500+ $
