This was in my 2000 Explorer, the radio worked but the LCD screen did not. I found out this is a common problem that is easily fixed. The solder joints on the power supply board of the radio heat up and loose connection. I just re soldered the connections and its working great again. Good repair tips but your head got in the way a few times and really could not see what you where doing, I was wondering, you noticed a certain spot on the circuit board that looked like it was the problem do you think that is the key repair instead of re soldering the whole board?
I tried this it still don't work may have to replace the board
my 2007 ford focus wagon radio just started flashing, when turned on it will work for a minute then make a loud sound and stop working. My intenna fell off about 2 months ago but the radio and cd player still worked. I also have no interior lights. I'm assuming I have wiring issues with the car.

Not worth the trouble. lol. Just get an aftermarket stereo.
I basically just took the panel off and found crust all over the resistors and railways. I carefully rubbed it off and blow off all the residue and its working now no need to solder 🙂

Thanks very much for the Video. I have had two fords with this radio and they both did the same thing after about 2 years. One on cold days would work for about ten to fifteen minutes and once the interior of the truck warmed up, the display would die, so I knew it was probably a cold solder joint, but was clueless on where to look. Your Vid pointed me to right circuit board. I couldn't locate my soldering iron with the fine tip so used a bigger one and was only able to heat up the more pronounced solder joints. did it test run and the display did not work, so spent a half hour locating my other solder iron that allowed me to get into all the smaller spots and wa-la. So glad to have the display again missed the clock and knowing what channel I was on. Thanks again you are awesome.

Actually, unplugging the stereo (or car battery) will reset the module internal to the stereo. Sometimes these modules freeze up and cause issues related to inoperative displays, no button function, etc, so a simple power reset does the trick.
Just did it on my 98 explorer. Very, very simple. I have never soldered b4 this so it's doable. Cost me 20 bucks total at Radio shack for the solder gun and thinnest wire you can buy. A magnifying glass would've have made it easier but a bright LED light was enough. Worked like a charm been 4 days still good. thanks for the video
This worked for my 2000 explorer limited. Two days later it went dim again. Reflow again? I replaced the two caps too
My 2002 XLT Extended cab Ranger radio display was partially blank and several buttons did not work. Removed radio easily: insert 4-10 penny nails in into radio removal holes and push outward to L & R sides on all 4 at once while pulling out. This will remove the radio while leaving the center stack in place. Do not remove 2 screws… Troubleshoot problem to find cause was display board solder pads with poor solder job. Rest of radio looked like a solid design. Reheated solder pads with small soldering iron and reinstalled with 3 T-10 screws. Reconnect power/control connector and antennae. Works GREAT and didn't cost anything!
How did you know it wasn't the circuit board on the faceplate ? I saw one display fix that he soldered that board !! thanx !
just wish i knew the " one connection" that needs re soldering instead of doing all them an taking a chance of fing something up
dang soldering all then connection that killed the idea of me wanting to fix my blank screen on my 99 Expo afraid of messing it up to were it won't even play lol
I had the same problem in a 2003 F150. The solder joint for one of the tabs on the metal can to the PCB was definitely broken and possibly one of the leg connections on the 8-legged chip in the middle off the PCB. I re-flowed those and several other questionable connections. It works great now. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I got an 01 without the OEM radio and the JY radio has this issue, the stock system sounds great though, big fan
What that grey hook up used for that connects to nothing?
Any idea if something like this would work to fix the same problem in a 2013 f350 sync radio? It's not a touch screen, just the regular radio, the led screen is just blank/black…

On my board it was R1059 in the middle of the board beside the IC
it comes with the eddie bauer edition. it shows mpg, fuel in tank and oil level. it's kinda a gimmick I never use it.
