How to Diagnose OBD II Fault Codes P0171 and P0174 Leaking Intake and EGR Valve (06 Ford Freestyle)

We had a 2006 Ford Freestyle come in with fault codes P0171 and P0174. Both are lean codes meaning the O2 sensors were reading a lean condition. After watchi…

What you guys said about the other shop saying the trans was bad is exactly
why I prefer to do my own research and auto work. Too many shops out don’t
have a clue what they’re doing. Good vid guys.

For the love of god speak English. Why in the hell would I ever “like”
someone when they tell me to do so. I’m so sick of your type, and all
others like you. No, I do not like you.

Thanks for the info

Thank you for the video! I have a 171 and a 174 error code. Apparently the
engine is running too lean. Ford told me it was the mass air flow sensor as
well as the throttle body. They want $900 to fix it. So I went down to NAPA
Auto Parts, picked up a mass air flow sensor for $75 and fix that in a
matter of minutes. My check engine light is still on, just wondering if you
have any further advice for me. Ford said there was no air leaks and that
the codes they got were to repair the mass airflow sensor and throttle
body. But when I look up symptoms of people who need to replace their
throttle body they are things like hey bad idle whether it be too high or
too low lack of power and so forth. I have none of that. My vehicle runs
practically perfect other than a check engine light. I have a 2007 Ford
Expedition, any advice would be had. Thank you very much.

Constant Velocity Transmission???? Don’t you mean Continuously Variable
Transmission? Pretty good video though, thanks for sharing it. Definitely
picked up some good tips and pointers on how to diagnose lean conditions.
I’m gonna have to get me one of those smoke generators one of these days.
Thanks again!

hi I would like if you can do a review of OBDII Bluetooth/wireless scanner
sold on eBay that seems cheap and useful compare to those that are
expensive on the market. this is a good video and handy for those newbie
technicians

My 04 Mercury Monterey 4.2L also have these two codes, the FTST si 7.031
on bank 1 and 12.5 on bank 2, but FTLT for both bank 1 and bank 2 are 25%
even after I ram the RPM to 2500 it stay at 25%, the problem must be worst
then I thought.

rcraig005 says:

So the EGR Valve was Leaking when you did the Smoke Test but the Intake
Gasket was NOT leaking when you did the Smoke Test….So you did Intake
Gaskets why?!?! Oh wait….more money!?!? Maybe you should have just put
the Transmission in it!!! (Sarcasm)

Love it. subscribed. most shops around here don’t take time to diagnose
anything just swap parts.

Fantastic video! I appreciated the in-depth discussion of fuel trim. For
those of us who don’t have access to a smoke machine, what do you think
about watching the fuel trim while spraying carb or brake cleaner around
the intake?

Jared Milline says:

got a 98 chevy tahoe with this problem cant seem to figure it though help
please

AutoEclinic says:

I need a little more information please. What are your fuel trims, mass air
flow and map readings. Email me at info@autoeclinic . com or
michael@norrisautoclinic . com Thanks. Michael and Aaron.

AutoEclinic says:

you have to use a scan tool to watch the vehicle data to see fuel trim.
Fuel trim is a calculated value from the PCM, not raw data you can use an
oscope to see. Thanks Michael and Aaron

AutoEclinic says:

I do not like pc based scopes. What we use is a snap on scope. Now they are
pricey, but they work and work well. Fluke makes a 2 Chanel scope for
around $1000 i believe, and there are a couple of other brands that make
affordable scopes. I have had no luck with pc based lab scopes. Good luck
and thanks for the question. Michael

Thank you for the great feedback. Michael and Aaron.

first off, very helpful!! but I have an issue with a 5.4 f150 with high
calculated load at idle.. where do I start its not the first f150 with
theseprobs at my shop but I want to figure this out please help

rfn944 says:

Hi, Where do you probe to see the fuel trim? I have a dual channel
tektronic 100 mhz O-Scope. Getting P0171 on a 4 cyl 1.8T VW passat.

jsn1080 says:

Very well done. Thanks.

MrGourman87 says:

hey would having both of these lean codes affect my had mileage? & also is
there a single, more common issue that results in both codes showing up?

AutoEclinic says:

Thanks! Don’t forget to check out our website!

AutoEclinic says:

You are right. you can use brake or carb clean while watching fuel trims.
If you have a vacuum leak fuel trims should lower when you are at the
vacuum leak. Thanks Michael and Aaron

Thank you for the great feedback. Michael and Aaron.

I want to get a semi-pro or pro scope like that as I am thinking of opening
a shop soon. I have been restoring cars and working on side, but this sort
of advanced work is right up my alley as a pretty tech savvy guy. What sort
would run on a PC or dedicated device? I have used Torque app and scanners.
