How to Change the DPFE Sensor on a 2001 Ford Focus

Changing the DPFE Sensor (Delta/Differential Pressure Feedback EGR Sensor) Most shops in Dallas will charge $280 for parts and labor, but the Ford Factory pa…

Brian Culwell says:

The single overhead cam Focus or SPI had the DPFE mounted on the firewall
with 2 small bolts. Need tools for the SPI nevertheless it is easier to get
to. If you back probe the wire furthest from the vacuum lines and unhook
the vacuum hose off of the EGR valve and idle it should read about .9
volts. Hook up the vacuum line to the EGR and it should jump to around 4-5
volts. If the voltage does not change, the DPFE is bad.

Thanks man.

How do I change my dpfe sensor on a mercury mystique

mnsaguirre says:

The check engine light went off, but it failed inspection because the
computer wouldn’t reset until it went 60 miles.

mnsaguirre says:

The air intake? I was in a hurry and just trying to get a video to help
save some people some money.

Gudog1 says:

Thanks so much for the video. I no nothing about cars but was able to
change the DPFE sensor thanks to your video. While it stopped the check
engine light (1401 code), the car now does not idle properly. It sputter
idles when stopped and eventually stalls. All I did was change the DPFE and
clean the two small tubes that it connect to. Any ideas? Thanks

mnsaguirre says:

@ArcaneDreams I took it to get inspected after the light went off, and it
failed (in Texas) and the guy said it has to go 60 miles for it to reset.
After that, it passed.

artfd says:

Pretty good video, it looks like you held the camera in one hand & did the
repair with the other. I have a 2001 Ford F150 4.2L V-6 & have just
replaced the same DPFE sensor, which looked exactly the same as the one
illustrated. My sensor was much easier to see, on top of the engine towards
the right front. The plastic clip on the electrical jack was very tight, I
had to use a screwdriver to release it & broke a little piece of plastic.
It still grips firmly though.

Thanks for this

silversgoldvs says:

I’ve had my engine light on for ever.

anonymousphox says:

@mrbrutus111 In the end I paid a small fee to a mechanic to get it removed,
he unbolted the air duct above the sensor so he’d have more space to work
in. He simply used more force than me, looks like the sensor is a little
more sturdy than I assumed. I only gave him like $20 though. The check
engine light went away by itself within about 15 minutes of driving, and
never came back. been like half a year since then.

mnsaguirre says:

@armadaman22 Sure!

Erik Greene says:

@mamalishki The engine will have a noticeable surging during light
throttle.

sweetlips4jordan says:

hey nice vid my focus is giving me hell it keeps cutting out when i put it
in drive can someone help me out ?

caitlin prosser says:

i have a 2001 ford focus zx3 it keeps losing fire and idles bad and feels
like it looses 1 or 2 cylinders when it happens the car loses power and
speed and when i hold clutch in coming to a stop it stalls out but starts
back up what could problem be

caitlin prosser says:

what was it doing before u changed it?

galileofig says:

I think I have to replace the same thing on my 2001 FF sohc, but, what
problem did you have that forced you tho change the part? regards

mnsaguirre says:

Sorry, I don’t know. I am not a mechanic. I took it to a mechanic to get
the diagnosis, but did the repair myself.

SpikesAllOver36 says:

Hey if you want to work on your own car. You should learn what “this” is
called….it may help in the future to know

mnsaguirre says:

It felt like it was misfiring.

mnsaguirre says:

@laurenm21205 No problem. Just try to pay it forward, if you can. Know how
to fix something on your car, or anything else for that matter, pass it
along on youtube. I just wanted to help people save money. I’ve used other
peoples’ videos to learn stuff, too.

artfd says:

There is a lot of commentary on Ford repair websites casting doubt on the
quality of non-Ford DPFE sensors vs. the ones from Ford itself. My Ford
unit cost $63, the Autozone unit cost $36, I bought it from Ford.

ted2shred says:

Did you disconnect the battery first?

Jmoney11193 says:

@ArcaneDreams disconnect your negative battery cable for 5 minutes and hook
it back up. crank up and your light is gone.

MinchkinTheMunchkin says:

If you wanted to get rid of the check engine light right then and there,
you can pull off the negative battery cable while you switch them out. The
only downside is that you loose your radio settings.

whydoessomeonealways says:

I’m getting error P1409 EGR Vacuum regulator. Is this fix for it? From what
I’ve read this part goes out pretty easy and often.

luther gohnson says:

I was wondering if any one can tell me what could be causing my 2002 ZX5
ford focus to be over heating but its only if I have been driving it and
have to stop for a red light or stop for a long period of time, any body
have a clue on this?? Thanks Shana!

ArcaneDreams says:

Thanks for this. I have a 2001 crown vic. It was in a different location on
my car but your video helped me in finding and changing it. Hopefully my
check engine light goes off soon.

anonymousphox says:

@mrbrutus111 forgot to add, he pulled it out by pulling from one side up a
bit, then the other up a bit, until it popped out. It appears that the
tubes the sensor is mounted on are flexible.

anonymousphox says:

Dude, your video is great, however I have a question: How can I loosen the
sensor? In my focus, it seems to be stuck so stubbornly I can’t pull it out
not even with both hands, and now my fingers hurt. It looks like I have the
OEM one because it is pretty small (and thus harder to grip). I bought the
Autozone one which is significantly bigger. Do you know how to loosen it?
Thanks for the video btw!

mrbrutus111 says:

@anonymousphox I have the same problem on my ford escape. how’d you end up
getting the sensor off?

Valvos says:

im having the same problem, and was wondering if i could do this myself, i
found the part for about $30, they were gonn charge me $124 for the part
and $47.50 for labor!!

mamalishki says:

What symptoms caused you to change the DPFE?

wafrederick says:

Very common part to fail on Fords.I replace a lot of these and most auto
parts stores stock them

mnsaguirre says:

Hey, everyone. For those of you who were helped by this video, I am
grateful to have hopefully saved you some money. To those who were not (or
will not be) helped, I am sorry. As to the questions some of you have
asked, I do not know. I am not a mechanic, but am just a father of five who
cannot afford to go to one 🙂 If you ever get the chance, post a video of
you working on your car, you will probably help more people than you think
you might. Thanks for all the comments.

bpmiller87 says:

@mamalishki. . .Just in case you have not got a response yet. Your check
engine light will be on, and you will typically experience a bucking
sensation in the car/truck/suv. Some people have said it feels like you
have a trailer being towed behind you that is jerking the vehicle.

mnsaguirre says:

@mamalishki It felt like it was not firing on all cylinders, and it had
gone out before, at which time the repair was $350+. I hurt then, but I had
no way to afford it the second time.

mnsaguirre says:

@ted2shred no, I didn’t. Wouldn’t hurt, though

silversgoldvs says:

My focus started stalling and acting really sluggish. Plus it was wasting
more gas then usual. I was told it was the egr valve. But my father
unlawful suggested to change the ignition coil which cost 75bucks. The car
works great and no engine light.

Valvos says:

I just put mine on today, mine didnt snap either, and im scared its gonna
come off or somethign lol, but i trust u!
