Good video I have a tip though. After you take of the drum the first thing
you should do is hose it down with brake cleaner to keep the dust out of
your lungs, plus it needs to be clean anyway like you mentioned.

I wish I hada found this vidoe before changing mine,it wouldve saved me a
couple of hours,plus a day shot to hell getting them to reinspected.not to
mention every shop Ive been in in the past couple years seems like a
government office,never let you slide on something minor the way they used
to,they used to let you pull your auto in the bay,and blow the horn,work
the signal lights,those days are over.thats what I get for searching using
the make of my truck.

Holy SH@T! Thank you for this amazing video man. I took off my drum brake
today cuz I’ve been hearing some weird rear end noises on my truck and when
I opened the drum cover a bunch of springs fell down some were even
snapped! I’m going to use this video to help me rebuild both my rear brakes
on the weekend instead of paying $100 plus for someone to do it! THANK YOU
SO MUCH!!!!

So my breaks were acting funny and I went in for an oil change and they
said they’d look at my brakes for free. Long story short, they said I
desperately needed rear breaks for my 2003 Dodge Dakota. They quoted me at
$500…..went somewhere else and they quoted me $600. I was freaking out so
I youtubed “How to change drum brakes” and you made it look so easy so I
ended up doing them myself and I did a great job if I do say so myself. You
saved me over $500 and having to eat Ramen 3 times a day for a few months

Just did a 97 ford probe for a younger coworker. I hadn’t done them in
probably 15 to 20 years and it was just as bad as I remember! They were a
little different than these. That spring clip at 20min in was a lot cheaper
on the ford and a pain in the ass! Now I know why I always shy away when
people ask me if I can do them! lol I only did it because he is a younger
kid who is barely getting by but still a great worker at our Walmart tle!
We got it done though! I kept the other side on so we could use it to see
how to put it back together. But I like your picture method better as it
isn’t reversed like the way I did it! Why can’t they make shit simple? The
things we as humans have accomplished yet still have these pain in the ass
drum brakes!! lol

you dont always have to get new drums, you should take them to any
respectable shop first to see if they can be resurfaced, much cheaper.

Awesome Video!!! I kept reading on the forums that rear brakes for the
ranger were a HUGE PITA! Your video is extremely in depth and you hit
everything that I THOUGHT would be a problem!!

Doing this once it gets warm this weekend! Awesome video and thank you for
making it! Should be able to do my 2001 rangers rear brakes! (I don’t
think they have been changed once! from the previous owners…)

Brake spring pliers, which aid in the removal and installation of the top
springs, and the brake spring retainer tool for easy removal and
installation of the retain spring/”nail” assembly are $15 at Harbor Freight.

Self adjusting drum brake work when you back up and stop. The star wheel
is the main part of the self adjusting mechanism. Picking a nit, the other
cable and lever that contact the star wheel are NOT part of the parking
brake mechanism,

Once both sides are completed, you should back up and brake hard at least a
half a dozen times to complete the adjustment.
