I just rented a GMC terrain for our holiday road trip, and it had some level of self driving. On the highway it’s really nice when you don’t have to even touch the wheel for miles at a time
I knew that self-driving stuff would be a flop and a money waster.
Tell people the truth? What a novel idea.
If, ever, maybe. A government that can mandate EVs can mandate autonomous driving.
Meanwhile Tesla keeps advancing their self driving more and more every day while maintaining one of the best profit margins and the fastest growth rate. The argument against Tesla used to be that once the big auto manufacturers get into the EV and self driving business they're growth will come to a screeching halt. Now we see the opposite is true. Their competition realizes how far behind they are and are dropping like flies.
For the definition of common sense there should be a picture of Scotty.

I don’t understand the argument that humans and AI self driving can’t operate at the same time.. in fact it is currently happening albeit supervised by the driver. Like you said humans in cars already kill 40,000 people or more per year how much worse could it get.

Heh – I remember years ago you explained how full AI/autonomous driving wouldn't work in a shared driving environment. Sad that so many billions were (and are) being spent to come to that same conclusion (which I thought was pretty obvious).

No such thing as artificial intelligence. Why?
Well if it is created by man then it will somewhere have mans weaknesses built in.
Look how software, which is the base of AI, is updated often to fix "issues" made by the men programing it.
So your premise is that if all cars were self-drivers then roads would be a lot safer.
You sure about that? How many times have you come across a buggy piece of software over the years? How many software/operating system crashes? How many times have you seen sensors fail?
Yes, human drivers often do "unpredictable" things… But then so does software… Sensors and servos fail… Not to mention that driving conditions are also plenty unpredictable without human influence.
And that's just the thing: Humans can perform ADAPTIVE REASONING and CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING to cope with that unpredictability — something that even the most capable "AI" cannot do. This is why airliners still have human pilots at the helm, even though modern autopilots are (technically) capable of flying the plane from terminal to terminal.
