It would have been nice if we could see what you’re doing,
The Fuel Rail is in the way as it is virtually a nightmare in trying to get
the coil out on cylinders 8 & 7. great video but whoever designed those
engines and their parts had to be on another planet.
If you are changing all 8, definitely want to lift the fuel rail off the
injectors.
hey ..thanks for this. I have #4 misfiring 🙁 was thinking I have to
change it myself 🙁 However, I too went to o’really’s (LOL) and got the
coil. We shall see…thanks for posting this …I saw 7 was hard, here’s to
praying 4 is a bit better 🙂 Oh and I forgot to mention…I am in FROZEN
Michigan, where it is 10 effing degrees and no heat in garage. Thankful I
have one though…..one girl and her ole truck on the mend :D
I have done cylinders 3 and five on my expedition 5.4L. Good thing the
coils on 4,8 are done but with no spark plugs.
Same, same. We have f-150s, explorers & expeditions in the family that all
have to get worked on. All equally a PITA!!! LOL
Man, that really is a pain to work on.
Geez… what a pain in the arse. Good video.
i went thru 3 coil packs untill i got the one that would run right. on my
97f150….anything rubber i got thru napa…..china is awfull with there
rubber products. cheaper yes
Pain in the butt…I have a 99 Explorer that is not much fun to work on
either…..
Thanks for checking out/in Kenny!
Yep. These things are cheap-o.
cool to learn about the new stuff but I’ll stick w/ my old stand-by
beaters…Thanks for the video!
Yep. Like fish in a barrel!
What a pain in the nuts…
LOL! When pulling spark plugs, you have to have the machine shop on speed
dial. These engines are well known for having the plugs break off in the
head. If I were doing a plug change, I’d do them all and tear down WAY more
of the crap that is in the way before getting into it. I don’t think we
could have fit the plug wrench into that hole. It’s insane how much stuff
is in the way… I guess that’s the way of the world though. ARG!
Sharin’ the info, feelin’ the flow. Workin’ it. Workin’ it.
Talk to the Germans… They have it. Everyone else seems to think it’s not
that important.
Gots to do some climbing and have slick small hands to get.to that!! Great
vid Greg..CJ
That’s why the latest SDs have quick removable cabs. You pull the wiring
and jack the cab up to work on the engine! FUN….
Tight! They need to open up the format a bit.
i got tired of my 97 blowing coils. spent 400 and got the entire set of msd
coils. been running strong for going on 2 years without another coil
failure.
Oh man. Big hands and tight spaces… Yuck.
Yes its just windings inside. If they had put dielectric grease on that
contact when they were new, it would probably last forever.
Checkin it out lol
Never a cylinder that is easy access.
I didn’t know MSD made these coils… That would be the way to go. The
rears are hard to get at for sure.
I hope he changed the plug while he had the coil out. I sure wouldn’t want
to go through that again anytime soon. lol
Small hands with long fingers! Thanks CJ.
What ever happened to quality?…
Gotta feel for mechanics… trying to get fingers in all those little
places– and having to get special tools… and training…
Ahh… With 175,000 miles, I’m guessing it was pooched… That would make
sense though. Hard to believe a solid state coil has much that will go
wrong. It’s just windings right?
Glad yall got it fixed.
I’ve replaced hundreds of those coils on Ford Triton engines. Sometimes you
can pull the boot and the spring off and clean the terminal inside. They
get moisture inside causing that terminal to turn green.
Yep, Triton If it isn’t a coil it’s a blown out plug…
my 97 f150 has the same setup. true pain in the but if its the one of the 2
rear ones on the drivers side cause you have to remove the fuel rail on
that side. also the early triton, they were bad about puking plugs.
A dud coil is a feature not a fault on those things…lol
Thanks man!
Thanks Matt.
