I got noise exactly like this on my 1997 ford E-150 4.6L(Windsor) with
135,000miles, but it goes away when it warms up. Do you think it might be
the camshaft phaser or something else?. The weird thing is when i replaced
my spark plugs the noise went away completely and then after 2 months it
started coming back slowly, and like i said it does it only on cold engine
startup for about 15 minutes and then it’s 100% gone. No shavings in the
oil pan and it only burns a quart of oil every 4500 miles. I think it has
something to do with combustion, because i also have pinging when i use 87
octane when engine under load, but no pinging when i use 89 octane. PLEASE
REPLY IF YOU CAN.
THANK YOU.

Is there any way with new parts that the 3v could be as “solid” as the 2v?
I’m asking this because I’ve had truck after truck and all of them made
noises big time and one of them even blew up! I finally settled on a 2009
f-150 5.4 3v thinking I’ve finally found a rig to keep! It’s also my first
ford and I had very high hopes. Bought it used at the dealer. Well after a
couple years now it’s starting to tick or rattle whichever you prefer. It
not at the hot idle that you stated and not at speed but seems to happen at
very low rpm when engine is being put under load. Specially creeping up
steep hills. I got some rough starts sometimes but it never ticks at idle
at least not the tick I think I’m trying to spot. It went to the mechanic
today who explained vct and with the mikes it has (76k) it’ll rattle a
little. Well when I cruse out a parking lot and hit the gas just a little
the rattle comes and it’s rather embarrassing. It’s not super loud but I
can hear it. Normal wear or not I find this diagnosis unacceptable. I just
want a truck that doest make noises or cost me a fortune!!!! :-(

What causes these cam phasers to go bad, and how much would this cost at a
dealer to repair? I’m thinking about buying a 2007 Lincoln navigator with
110,000 miles on it, are these reliable engines or should I just run away
from it? I need to get a minimum of 100,000 extra miles from that engine if
I purchased the vehicle

teecuzbruh says:

Ford told me my entire right bank on 5.4 3V (from drivers seat) is at 20%
thanks to the phaser,,new motor $7400 installed 3 year unlimited mileage
warranty for a reman.

My question to you is how can I make sure the improvements have been made
on my reman engine? Mainly a stronger higher volume oil pump from what I
have been reading.

Mark Smith says:

FML. Just bought an ’09 F150 with the 5.4L 180Km on it…
engine lights on and it feels like its gonna stall at really low idles,
like when I try to put it in reverse or at a red light.
Ticks at cold start up but nothing really after. (some clicking just
started at low idle aswell).

From what I’ve seen it looks like cam phasers or Lifters. This looks like
a big job. Worth trying to return this truck? or get this fixed

Willi Vanilli says:

Very good explanation, did my cam phasers over the weekend. Driversside was
definitly broke. The 3 rollerpin securing the frontplate to the gear were
broken.
Fixed my clack clack noice…espescially on start up.
Still got a clack clack noise after the engine warms up. In idle barely
noticable…gets loud around 2000 rpm.
Also as long there seems to be a load on the engine it’s kinda ok…when
shifting there is the rattling noise
No noise driving when the engine is cold
5 speed manual, 2005 Mustang GT.
Any ideas/suggestions ??
Maybe lifters ???
Anyhelp is greatly appreciated

David Jones says:

Great video. Now I just need to figure out if the noise on the LH side of
my 4.6l is a bad lifter or indeed the phaser. Any advice on making that
determination?

Cole Mendoza says:

I have a 2005 f150 5.4. when i start it, it make a loud dry nocking sound
under the valve cover on the driver side. It goes away 5 seconds after i
start it. The noies is coming center ways of the vavle cover. After i turn
it off and let it sit for 10 minutes then start it, it does it again for
the same amount of time. If i turn it off and then turn it back on it will
not do it. Im in a bind here, so please help me out and thank you in
advance. I watch your videos all the time and there very helpful.

Did he say this is a 2011 Expedition?

wingdad19 says:

Do you have any tips for reinstalling the follower on cyl 8? Got the others
back on but 8 won’t budge? Cannot find a valve spring compressor anywhere
local not even the ford dealers. Thanks.

Bradley Grisanti says:

Ok Im about to under go this repair but for I begin I want to make sure
that I have all my ducks in a row. What is the purpose of removing the
Roller Followers. In video about livernois Motorsport on how to in their
cam phaser Lock Out Install they never turn the crankshaft nor do they
remove any followers. Also how long should this take to do? Thirdly on a
2005 f50 5.4 do you have any tricks on how to easily access all of the
bolts holding on the valve cover or is it just going to be a pain.

guayaco3299 says:

Great job in explaining everything…
Funny thing.im just finishing doing one on a 05 expedition but mine had
also a broken guide..

jr scott says:

Their was an OTC kit that I bought that holds the cam shafts in place… Do
you think I could get away with using that tool WITHOUT removing the cam
shaft rollers/followers? Thanks for the video too :)

Steve Rob says:

Fantastic. Presentation . Is the cam phasers a maintance item or is it a
lack of oil changes that causes the phaser to fail.

ManicMechanic007 says:

Good Job.

Omar Soto says:

I’m about to change phasers on a 07 expedition EB. do you know if there is
a upgrade (new design) on phasers for this vehicle ? The parts I saw on
internet where : 3R2Z 6A257-DA. Thanks ! Keep up the good work

Chris Barmby says:

I am doing my solenoids this weekend in my 2007 f150 but everywhere I read
that you need to discharge the a.c to get the passenger valve cover off. I
couldn’t help but notice that you did not mention that in this great video,
so do I need to or not, I’m confused now, lol. If so how does one go about
doing so. Great video by the way very informative exactly what I was
looking for minus the ac of course. Thanks

i need help with my 05 mustang gt, what state r u located??

Michael Reece says:

I have a 08 f250 and I think my truck is having the same problems. ..but I
don’t hear it all the time….what is it going to cost me to have this
fixed? ??? Is it a lot of labor cost involved

wingdad19 says:

Got something interesting with this. When rotating the crank to position
for removing followers the right pass side chain went slack? Unfortunately
didn’t get the front cover off yet to further inspect. Will update once I
do. Guess I have found the source of the problem.

Bradley Grisanti says:

Great video. I have a 2005 5.4. With 92000. I have noticed that when I
change the oil on my truck that it’s low. I have to ticking and plan to get
that fixed soon. Do u think the loss of of is due to this.

5litreho says:

I have a 2002 2v 5.4 with 261, 000 miles and the engine has never been

Once again thanks for the vid, these are very helpful, I have a 05 4×4

have finally failed, do you have a video on the oil pan removal, thanks

Craftsman tools?

Zak Hancock says:

Great video. Thanks so much. I have been waiting for this one as I feel
it is only a matter of time until my 2006 Mark LT has this issue. 82,000
miles right now and no issues to peak of. Would you ever recommend
changing all of the timing chains and tensioners etc. just as a
preventative maintenance when a phaser goes out? I have seen some guys
saying it is the only way to do it on forums and such…

Mark Ferraro says:

great video learned alot

twoeagle86 says:

haha, almost sounds like a diesel!

AL P says:

There seems to be those who say the cam rollers are not necessary to
remove, is this so?

Roc400 says:

I just started having the same problem with my truck. 04 f150 with 179,000
miles. I took it into my local ford dealer and wasn’t happy with my
options. To fix both heads $5500 or get a reman for $7000. Does the fix it
price seem a little high? He also said its possible my cam may be scared,
but would know until the v/c are pulled off. I’ve had my truck for almost
10 yrs and it’s in excellent condition. Would hate to get rid of it for a
truck payment. Thanks for your response in advance.

moparace1995 says:

I have same question as JR Scott. I worked for Chrysler for 15 years and
we had devices to lock camshafts in place. Is there no unofficial shortcut
to locking the cams rather than taking the rollers out?

giovanni Indellicati says:

like your video, I have a ford F250 2003 , with 198,000. miles, it have a
triton 5.4l runs awesome a friend suggest a do the timing change soon , it
will cost me $ 980,00. and another friend is telling me because is a chain
don’t have to be done. how many miles do it gose, I bought the truck new ,
change the oil every 3 to 4 thousand mile and using the best cysterici oil

AllieAussie says:

Thank you for producing these video’s specific to Ford products. I have a
2004 F150 5.4 with 189K. Unfortunately, I believe I may have to do timing
chains and tensioners as well. Please make a video of how to accomplish
this. If I choose to do chains and tensioner, should I also consider
replacing anything else while I am at it? Water pump? Oil pump? Thanks
again…….

Timothy Cote says:

the 3 valve 5.4 is the worst engine Ford ever built IMHO….terrible design

blerick2 says:

have a 2002 explorer and the driver side makes alot of clattering noise,
doesnt miss, is it a phaser making this noise or chain guides. 200k on
this and good oil pressure
thanks for any help

Timothy Johnson says:

I got 1999 f150 4×4 it’s got a knock in it and it will go dead at a idle
and some times it poor smoke out the tail pipe and some times it won’t and
it’s hard to get passed 55 mph but after 55 mph it will run good then

Thank you!! You do a great job keep up the great work!!!

Chris Jones says:

Great video man!

wrifraff says:

Nice video. Definitely appreciate a visual guide. I read the service
procedure and couldn’t understand why you’re suppose to remove the roller
followers but I get it now. Diving into my dad’s 06 F250 tomorrow to do
phasers, chains, guides and tensioners. Should be fun!

robert patterson says:

i have an 05 f150 and the dealer says it’s the phasers that are making the
noise. I’ve watched the video and youre rotating the crank to repostion the
cams then placing tension on the chains. My question is, if you wedge the
chains and mark the phasers and the chains why do you need to pull the
rockers and ratate the crank seeing that there are arrows on the phasers
that you can mark. ive seen a product that wedge the phaser open and they
remove then reinsstall the phasers without playing with the crank and
rockers

Rhys Williams says:

Can you help with my ford Ka radio code, serial number M000047? Thank you

wingdad19 says:

will removing the 3 roller lifters work for doing the phasers and the
timing set as well? and thank you for the videos very helpful and
informative.
