Before changing out the voltage regulator and brushes, be sure to inspect those copper 'slip rings'. If one or both is worn down to the shaft, (high mileage vehicles), this 'little fix' will be a waste of time. An alternator tear down and slip ring replacement will have to be done. If not more. This is a great video for a simple fix though. Thanks dude.

they jacked the prices. i got a voltage regulator ordered picking it up tomorrow from o reilleys. costing me about $65 with taxes. i suppose its still a little cheaper then the $160 for the complete unit. according to there test my regulator failed but my diodes passed. knowing my luck my regulator will be ok and the wires running from it are bad but i dont have a volt o meter so yeah i hope this works for me.

I'm definitely going to check mine before I buy another alternator. Just spent $130 on a new battery because the battery light came on & the guy @ the parts house tested it & said yep, you need a new battery. Well, 2 days later the damn battery light came on again. I am going to check the brushes in the morning for sure…

You can get new quality alternator & starter motors parts at saverepair.com. Enter you part serial number and it will bring up all parts that are suitable for it.

Thanks for the great info! This fix worked for my 2006 Ford E350 XLT Super Duty, however the part numbers were different, and I found just the ceramic assembly with brushes at oreilley's for $6.99 (part no. X380 there.)

Seriously, thanks again, sir! You've got some great karma coming your way!

Not to long ago I paid 120$ to get this done on my car.

And that type has the holes through the brushes, so push them in and push a pin through the housing then through the brushes to hold them back, once the unit is in the alternator, just pull the pin to release the brushes 🙂
A nice touch by the manufacturers.
i used to work in an auto electrical job, seen the idea there 🙂
