Sometimes to make life easier when aligning the timing chain cover at
re-assembly, I have purposely omitted the installation of the crank seal
until the cover has been secured. This allows me lots of play around the
crank to position the timing cover. Regardless, the job you did looks good.
Thanks for the video and sharing the knowledge.

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

@CODxFUNxMAN yeah if it looked like a chunk missing in the cover (usually
from corrosion) that is when you will need to replace the cover. The
sealant I used was just a spray on gasket adhesive, you can pick it up at
just about any auto parts store.

1975dentonj says:

@cocacolakid45 ok the same thing happened to my lincoln town car i have all
the bolts loose but the noes that broke off and im hoping like hell theyre
frozen in the cover as well and ya my cover wont come off it just keeps
shattering

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

It took us about 3 hours to make the video, the actual time required will
all depend on your level of automotive repair experience. To be safe, I
would give yourself a full day to work on it. This is one of those jobs
where you can run into unexpected problems that require more time.

GearHeadHick429 says:

great idea put the aluminum surface of the timing cover where the gasket
must meet up on rough pavement and proceed to press down on it. very
helpful video but that made my cringe

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

I used both, I first glued the gasket to the block, you can see it happen
at around 16:50 in the video

THCnelson says:

at 8:02, why would coolant be leaking from the timing chain cover? i didnt
think any coolant was going back there? cause i have a puddle of coolant in
that exact corner in my 5.0. just wanna understand it before i replace the
cover gasket?

M9semi says:

hey i got a 1986 ltd crown vic 5.0 and have a coolant leak around the same
area but its not any of the hoses would you say its the water pump?

David Mejia says:

mine is leaking from the same spot! I am about to re seal my whole engine,
since it is leaking about a quart a month

Guigui192 says:

Would like to know how much time the book gives you and how long did it
took you?

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

@ibanezgeorge Identical

lifestooshort81 says:

is the leak point a common leak on fords? My 84 f-150 (w/ a 302 ) is
leaking coolant from that same exact spot. I initially thought it was the
thermostat housing and accidentally over-torqued the bolt to the housing
and cracked it. After replacing the housing I still had a leak. That was a
few years ago. I’m just now getting around to doing the cover gasket.
Thanks for posting/sharing this video! It certainly gives me some good
insight as to what I’m up against. 🙂

331str0ker says:

what about all of the old gasket debris that was all in the motor when you
took off the old gasket?? what did you do with that??

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

The book calls for 2.7 Hours + 0.4 for AC, and 0.2 with Power Steering, so
a total of 3.3 Hours. It took us about half a day with shooting the video
and taking breaks.

pirate2086 says:

thanks for the great video I will be doing this tomorrow and this will be a
great help. any vids with the alternator upgrade my lights dim at idle and
when rpms are raised the lights brighten back up and again thanks.

cowboys539 says:

hows it going man i have an 88 ltd crown vic 5.0 …..in the morning when i
start it it turns on fine but after running it for some reason when i want
to turn it on again it hesistates alot and wont start till about thirty
minutes later what can be the cause thanks in advance.

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

@jkdj5 Adding sealant on that back cover is optional, you should be fine
without it.

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

no, you can replace just the water pump without removing the crankshaft
pulley or harmonic balancer.

Sam Johnson says:

Great video. Thanks for the knowledge.

Shannon Cuales says:

What did you use to clean the old gasket of the timing cover?

justinsn95 says:

Well, I’m afraid this video doesn’t really inspire much confidence. I mean
its a great vid, but at the beginning he said something like “its not as
bad as it sounds” or something to that effect, and just look at the sheer
number of steps. Better just to pay someone to do this job. Then again if
you had a lift, it looks like you could just come at it from the bottom.

micknm says:

you solved my problem on taking the timing chain cover remember it is
aluminum and it can break i have this motor in a f150 93 non stock version
taken from galaxy or a mustang my first encounter was with 289 y block in a
67 cougar no i dont have that one anymore ! have 79-82 mustang but cant
afford to rebuild it

Luis Ceballos says:

My 1994 Mustang 5.0 always has fresh oil on the front of the oilpan were
the cover to oilpan seal goes, and it also has oil on the swaybar wich is
right in front of it, my engine leaks oil cuz i have to add about a quart
per week , could it be the front main seal or the rubber seal thats goes
between the pan and the timing cover ? I need to replace my balancer
because it wobbles so i might aswell replace them, it looks like they
replaced the waterpump and they did not do the timing cover job.

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

The coolant going to and from the water pump passes through the timing
cover, You can see the passages that the coolant passes through at 15:12 in
the video.

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

haha, in hindsight I think I would have left those corner cork pieces out
and just used a heavy amount of RTV. After about a year, those corners
started leaking, and the cork pieces were all distorted.

john210garcia says:

dido for the timing chain. ..but thanks for postingthis up.there arent many
5.0 how tos here.

Jetster007 says:

absolutley amazing haha been working on 88 gt all day to fix that gasket to
fixx coolant leak in the exact same spot too bad i didnt find this video
till after we had spent hours of wasted time to eventually get the cover
off. i guess the seal was really tight but this is awesome and has
reassured me that everything i have done according to owners manual has
been exactly right too thumbs up for this 😀

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

Hi, actually the 91 Mustang GT has a Timing Chain, and it is extremely rare
for anything to go wrong with it. I would suspect something in the
starting/charging system is the culprit. Most likely either the battery
itself really is dead, or the starter is bad.

Robert Brand says:

Thank you so much I was working on my Merc GM, 302 V8 and the Studs had so
much Gunk on them and Rounded off, I didnt see they were studs at
first….. I have never done a Water pump till this car.

phattvids says:

Great job but I cannot leave without saying, and maybe this is just me.
“Your HANDS should be as clean as possible when handling gaskets, spreading
sealant etc.” I use brake cleaner, lacquer thinner(yea it stings) or at the
very least glass cleaner to wipe my hands free of grease. Also,on the front
main seal a super large socket or a chunk of 2×4 should be used to press
the seal in in a uniform manner, the use of a bare hammer is highly
discouraged in my opinion. Excellent job otherwise, thanks!

Havan21 says:

Awesome Video, Thank you ! Extremely helpful !

Oscar Roman says:

i have a 2000 3.8 but the damper does not have bolts ,,is the harmonic
balancer an damper one unit, or do i need a special tool..

Tommy Verceti says:

Dude god bless you for this video! Fuck my mechanic!

Auto Parts Direct To You says:

@tmaqbool21 I use the spray gasket sealer on all the gaskets, (except for
the oil pan where I had to cut the old gasket off). The spray gasket is
Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket, really great stuff.

Tyler Duzick says:

great video helped me a lot

xxSnIpEiNsAnItYxx says:

how long is this process?

hdmfba2 says:

man i am at the part where i need to put the new gasket and water pump on
so i did every thing hooked it all back up and as it filled with coolant it
stated to leak on either side of the back of my timing case at the top two
little holes. is the gasket supose to cover those and it not leak or do i
fill it with gasket stuff to get to stop leaking i am torn down again and i
cant for the life of me figure out why or what covers those tiny holes to
