Here is a complete video of the correct and proper way to fix this
problem. I did not make this video, however the owner did send this to
me. This would take approx 2 hrs to complete should you decide to do this
yourself.

The flap is along the side, near the metal bar.
Don’t force anything, the flap is approx 1″ x 2″
Great
Having the same problem
Life saver!!!!!!
thank you thank you thank you save my life!
2007 Sport Trac remove the lower pop off panel( ON PASSENGER SIDE) push
pin pull out towards side and slide panel out , listen for click locate the
sound place hand of the lever. turn vehicle off turn heat control unit for
season (hot or cold) if for heat pull down on the lever if for col AC pus
lever up towards vertical. replace panel start and drive after the first
time you can do it very quickly. NOTE TELL EVERYONE NOT TO USE THE CONTROL
FOR TEMP, USE BLOWER OR WINDOWS TO COMPENSATE, IF YOU MOVE THE TEMP CONTROL
SWITCH IT MAY ALLOW FOR THE CHEAP NYLON GEAR TO THROW IT OUT OF POSITION
AND REPEAT OF THE FIX IS NEEDED AGAIN..
Fantastic! Took a few tries to figure out what I was feeling for…but I
have heat again!
I spent that last few years just fiddling with the blower and it would
“pop” on its own but that stopped working this year so you were a
lifesaver!
I am sitting here LMAO, I was looking at a repair bill of $617…..followed
your directions and low and behold….HEAT. Thanks for the video
instructions. It did not cost me a penny. It took time to locate the
flap to flip down, but other than that “piece of cake”
We did this yesterday and it is now warm. Before when we tried to switch to
heat we had a clicking sound, now we have a loud thumping sound. Did we
miss something? We had this fixed in the shop more than 5 years ago, trying
not to spend another $800 on a 2004 Ford Explorer. Thank You so much for
this advice, but does anyone else have the loud thumping now and is there a
fix?
TWO DIFFERENT THINGS– people are confusing two different problems with
heat on their 02 Explorers….. The issue being addressed here in this
video is the flap that switches from defrost to floor vent. It is
controlled by a vacuum line and diaphragm valve that pulls a rod (actually
a flat piece of metal about 3/4″ wide and 6″ long) connected to the plastic
ear that moves the flap. That is what people can reach by accessing the
glove box. It only diverts the air from the defrost vents to the floor
vents. It has nothing to do with HEAT… it diverts cold air just as
well. If you literally have NO HEAT…. then you have to fix the Heat
Blend flap (on the bottom of the whole mess, or the blend door actuator (on
the left side next to the driver’s knee).
I have an 02 ford explorer, I was not able to find a flap, but a metal bar.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for the video……Quick question I still have the thumping noise is
that normal or should it have gone away???
You are my hero!! As a single mom, extra money isn’t available. You helped
me fix my heat, forever grateful!
I have a 99 Ford Ranger that only puts out lukewarm heat even after running
on the highway for a half hour. I will give this a try, thanks.
You have a broken gear in the blend door actuator. That is making the
clicking noise, the missing tooth in the gear. You may find a used motor on
Ebay for about $20.00 or so.
You appear to have a vacuum leak in one of the hoses. Oddly enough I have a
similar problem. If i have it on low power and the truck is facing downhill
I can feel it come through the vents and then I can switch it quickly and
it will stay until I turn it on low ore turn the truck off.
Thank you. you saved me 800+ and thousands if my wife divorced me over this.
Ok, can someone help me with a 97 f150 that will only blow air out of the
defroster vents?
Thank you Sir! You’ve given my truck new life! This is the best self help
video ever!
cool video and one thing about old ford cars is that you can get a good few
videos on how to fix them(that is good if you don’t pay much)
Yes, this should solve the problem.
Hey thanks a lot this really helped and moving the valve did turn the heat
on but I’m hearing the banging noise same as bryan1282… wanted to ask
you…would replacing the actuator completely fix this problem? Ive seen a
few in the $20-30ies price range on ebay…Thanks
THANKS! It worked!
