After removing the intake manifold to be repainted on my Ferrari 458, I asked you if I should also do the valve covers and valve cover gaskets. The consensus was yes. So Adam and I pull out the head covers as Ferrari calls them so I can send them out to be painted and also replace the valve cover gaskets. Turns out that it’s a pain.

Make sure you cover the valve covers with painter’s tape prior to reinstalling….
What a hard job
Actually, walnut blasting is the best way to clean the intake ports and valve stems and is widely used. It is very safe and even if a few shells get in the combustion chamber, they are so small and will burn immediately once the engine is fired up. It costs around $400 to $600 depending upon the car or service provider. My engine (N54) for example is notorious for extreme carbon build up and walnut blasting is almost exclusively used to clean them. Enough to where BMW parts sites are now selling walnut blasting kits. I highly suggest doing it.
Do not fear walnut shell blasting of the valves. BMW has had this procedure as a factory procedure for a very long time (before direct injection made it a necessity). I'd rather use walnut shells than have random chemicals wash the oil film off my cylinder walls, but that's just me.
Adam, when you have to explain a joke you’ve lost the crowd!!!!
Gasoline for f sake.
Admire your courage, digging so deep in such a precious and complex engine.

Is this operation even possible on a 458 Spider with the hard top mechanism in the way of everything?
