The valve cover gaskets on the Ferrari F430 are prone to having some leaking after a while. You can try to tighten down the valve cover bolts and sometimes that will solve the problem, but frequently the gaskets simply need to be replaced.

Replacing the gaskets requires removing the valve covers. To remove the valve covers you have to disconnect the wiring harness, pull the ignition coils, disconnect the cam position sensors, and disconnect the valve timing actuators. Once all these components are out of the way, you can remove the valve cover bolts and pop off the valve cover.

I was not able to fully remove the valve cover so I pulled off the old gasket and installed the new gasket while the valve cover was still in the engine compartment. I also replaced the ignition coil gaskets while I was in there.

Nice job Dan love to watch! Sad to see no more videos of the F430 maintenance since I have one. Did you pick a winner yet for the invasion giveaway? I remember you said you were picking one around May 14 or 15. Keep the videos coming of the 458!

Mr. Bean's Stuff says:

Not a fun job, but persistence pays off. For future reference pick up a tube of Yamabond 4. It’s a super sticky, non hardening gasket sealer. Put a dab in the corners of the gasket to hold it in place. P-cars have their own “F-it” moments due to German engineering. I own two of them so double the headaches… good luck with the sale of the 430. Looking forward to future videos.

Dr. Skillz says:

Ferrari of Austin probably loosened one of those bolts.

Edit: or pinched the top side by over-tightenening one of the bolts.

I had the same experience, except it was working on my dryer. I was determined and finished. My foot was asleep for three weeks.
Great job!!

Sandy says:

The reason they leak is simple:
340 ft-lbs @ 8500 RPM to make 500 HP.
Wear increases as the square of the speed of the surfaces. So 8500 RPM accumulates wear 2.62x faster than a car with rated HP at the 5252 RPM standard ((8500/5252)^2).

So an F430 with 36K miles has the same wear as a HP @ 5252 RPM engine (e.g. a C7 Z06) with 100K miles.

Easy rules of thumb:

HP @ 7500 RPM
lasts 1/2 as long as
HP @ 5252 RPM

HP @ 9000 RPM
lasts 1/3rd as long as
HP @ 5252 RPM

HP @ 10000 RPM
lasts 1/4th as long as
HP @ 5252 RPM

Trivia: An F1 car with 1000HP @ 24,000 RPM accumulates "100K-worth" of miles at 4,700 miles. But at that RPM, not all forces on the metal remain elastic, so some permanant plastic deformation probably shortens the design life much more.
