Good job explaining as you work. This 73 Challeger was done or started 4
years ago? Gee I recently picked up a 73, painted green from MOPAR red,
going back w factory tagged red…Nds all the sheet metal; full floors, inc
the trunks, both 1/4’s, inner-outer wheel houses,fenders… I’ve been
advised to start from rear working to front. ANY SUGGESTIONS and more
videos welcomed., Do you think I should leave inner rockers braced from
pillar to pillar b4 removing floors? Obliged.,Ff

jamesfreddys says:

I’m hitting before the weld to make sure the two pieces of metal are tight
before they get bonded together.

Shawn32671 says:

Great videos……5 stars from me.

kowen hartsook says:

@jamesfreddys hey got my miller 220 spot welder, works awsom, perfect
welds, no shortage of amperage, can burn a big hole if you want to, thanks
for the advice. getting ready to do quarters and drop offs and outer wheel
house on my dusters. keep up the great show,

zeppelin67637 says:

I have recently started trying to replace both 1/4’s on my 71 challenger.
No idea what I’m doing lol Scared to death I’m going to screw up but…
Can’t afford a pro so…I was told to do it with it sitting on the wheels
so everything sits right. I also have to replace the entire truck
floor”yeah its a mess of a car” In your opinion should I do the floor first
maybe? I realize you can’t tell me exactly how to do it without seeing it.
Just looking for advice.

hiltman says:

You’ll be fine as long as it’s not filmed live! That’s what video editing
is for!! Do you expect anything to be done with that Firebird? Or is it a
lost cause?

CoolasIce2 says:

Hey Jeff, have you heard of using SILICON BRONZE wire for you mig? I’ve
never tried it.

jamesfreddys says:

@dbc1dc Wish I did Jeff Lilly is in San Antonio. Also, Tucson isn’t that
far away.

jamesfreddys says:

I’m thinking more the standard Challenger cap, not the flip chrome one.

vcval says:

re the fuel cap in Australia the sports model of the dart was called a
pacer they had a flip cap on the top of the quarter. mounting the charger
flip cap on the side needs a spacer to fit rite and sticks out a mile i
have pictures if you like i could email them

Kell Alexander says:

good episode jeff.

jamesfreddys says:

This is the first I’m hearing of bronze brazing with the MIG. In my
experience most panels get welded in an area where warpage isn’t a factor
like say doing a butt weld patch on an outer panel surface is. You have
peaked my interest.

igotnomods says:

hey Jeff, would you use an auto metal direct quarter on one of your own
personal cars? I have a 75 dodge dart swinger and someone did a butcher of
a job installing quarter skins some time ago it appears.

Les Morris Racing says:

Nice work James.. I was wondering what ya might use for a rust pervention
system.. Like the Challenger gas cap idea and side marker light.. Gonna
look great bud! Les

Buddy Mcduffie says:

I have a 72 dart custom. Don’t laugh. If I could get a 69 2door I would.
lol Ant way You know they all are notorious for rotting out at the corners
of the back window and about 3 to 4 inches below the corners. As well the
bottom window jam has rust coming through the paint. I would like to just
replace quarter panels. But I priced a panel for like $1500. So my next
option is to patch them and can the jam be fab.? Do you have a video
pertain to that trouble spot on darts and the window

jamesfreddys says:

I don’t think you can get one for the 75 Dart. It’s advertised but it’s not
made yet.

jamesfreddys says:

Way too ugly for TV. I also might have to think before I spoke which is
getting harder after being around all these paint fumes for so long.

CoolasIce2 says:

The SILICON BRONZE wire needs lower heat to fuse the metal together. It
doesn’t actually welds, it brazes the metal pieces together. It’s strong
enough for joining panels, and with less heat there’s less warpage.

CoolasIce2 says:

Hey, speaking of BRAZING at the 1/4 panel, have you ever tried to use
SILICON BRONZE wire in your mig instead of steel wire? It

CoolasIce2 says:

Jeff, I hope you got one of those Chevy guys to clean that bird shit off of
the Dart.

bytmeh says:

@jamesfreddys i think you have a fan blowing on the camera or something

moparmusclecars says:

I need to replace both quarter panels and trunk floor. I was going to do
one quarter at a time and leave the doors etc on for alignment. Should i
just leave the car on the floor or is it ok to put it on jack stands under
the axle? Wouldn’t jack stands under be the same thing as far as how the
car would sit once back on the floor. What would you suggest?

jamesfreddys says:

@WELDINFORALIVIN Probably thirty to thirty five hours.

jamesfreddys says:

@moparmusclecars sounds like your just a bit nervous make sure the car is
level and give it a go. You might make mistakes but you will learn from
them.

Frank Rizzo says:

hey i have a question. I have a customer who needs work on a 68 firebird.
He needs both quarters, both inner rockers, and both floor pans cut and
welded it. Roughly how much labor cost would you estimate?

jamesfreddys says:

@bytmeh huh?

Shane B says:

great video looking forward to viewing others as soon as I have time

Jeremy rousseau says:

great stuff

newland5494 says:

Jeff your my idol man I could watch you all day long, you have an excelent
teaching ability, you should have your own show on speed vision or somthing
like that. Thanks for all the great educational tips

dbc1dc says:

Know anyone who can do your quality of metalwork in Austin, Tx? I need
quarters on my 70 Challenger. Thanks and great work!

jamesfreddys says:

@brockentractor If you’ve got the choice use a 220v welder, why not? All I
have is the 110v I’ve tested it and used it on a couple projects and it
seems to work without a problem. I do tend to space my welds closer
together but the failure of the spot weld doesn’t seem likely. I’ll post If
I notice a failure.

kowen hartsook says:

has anyone else done a repair similar to this? would you recomend a 110v or
a 220v spot welder

jamesfreddys says:

Firebird is for sale on craigslist Chuy found a decent builder not so far
gone.

eddie chavez says:

What do you recommend on stripping paint off a 72 Challenger?

vcval says:

hello i am not a welder and i know this is not a how to video i was just
wanting to know when you weld then hammer , is it the weld you are hitting
( to save time gringing) or the metal around it your hitting (stop the
metal from going out of shape)

4mulasvaliant says:

Nice work! Thanks for a peak into what I may be doing next! By the way…
If you never managed to get that Gas cap installed I sell and adapter that
will allow it with no metal work. Feel free to check it out at
Fliptopcapadapter . com Thanks again!

Shiny James Lamoureux says:

Im going to start fix 94 accord wheel wells but am unsure of whwts a good
starter welder for bodywork and exhuast work etc. Also any links for noobs
are welcome for that kind of thing. Thanks

jamesfreddys says:

the car is looking good, like Billy Crystal use to say.

jamesfreddys says:

I don’t worry about the # of views this is just a good time.

jamesfreddys says:

@mjk289 I’ve used one quarter panel skin and I kept lying to myself about
it working until it was too late. I am unhappy with the way it turned out
and I will never use one again. The skin was wrong in so many ways and I
kept putting more time in it to correct little things here and there. I
told myself I could compensate and while it finally came out acceptable for
a Driver I was wrong and I’ve got tons of time in the repair.

jamesfreddys says:

Rust prevention? I suppose it depends, you could use paint and some sort of
undercoat to seal up the metal, that’s probably the most universal way to
prevent rust.
