Regarding comment by Ray Lucas. Chrysler changed its recommendation to ATF
+4for most Rams, so that is what I use. I don’t believe it is a huge
difference. The two are compatible.

spelunkerd says:

Evidently Google won’t let me reply to Paul Sheer’s post directly. Damn
Google plus. Anyway, here it is.
Many shops will not adjust bands when they change trans fluid, and a
number of transmissions don’t require adjustment at each change. I don’t
think I would go back and do it again if there are no problems. But the
real question you are asking is whether you can easily fix the problem of
sticky shifting from R to P. I can’t say, That probably goes beyond the
scope of diy repair.

Spelunkard.

Perhaps it’s been mention in the previous 151 comments, but I’d double
check your offset torque wrench approach to the front band. Feel free to
correct me but only the beam torque wrench with the pivot in the handle
requires a certain hand placement. All other wrenches the torque in built
in with springs and loads. Electronic load cell excepted. I’d have to
know your wrench better to suggest how your extension affected torque and
make a force diagram. What do you think?

ive had bad experiences when the cooler leaks coolant into the automatic
transmission lines.. im thinking about buying a separate oil cooler for the
transmission to avoid this from happening again, good or bad??

Chris Lucas says:

Great video helped me a lot I have a 99 ram 1500 and was getting ready to
adjust the band’s my truck is having issues shifting from first to second I
have to get the rpms up let off throttle and then it will shift tanks for
the video keep up the good work

Bourne Accident says:

I wish you were my neighbor. Great video.

David1187 says:

Great video. I appreciate the insight on the specialty 8mm tool as well. My
Jeep has the 42re.. Holds 11 quarts all together, but only 6 come out on a
fluid drain.. Plus few different torque settings, but same procedure
nonetheless. Sorry if I missed it, but was ATF+4 used?. Chryslers need that
no exceptions. I am guessing you are Canadian?? Not sure on
the availability up there. I also recommend using Mopar gaskets. Nothing
wrong with the rubber ones, but the Mopars hold up very well and are
reusable for future drains. They even have metal spacers on all the bolt
holes so its impossible to smash the gasket when tightening and cause
leaks.

Top video well worth a like. I have a question, my automatic nissan is
slipping at higher speeds, it has only 59000 miles, would adjusting the
bands solve this.By slipping I mean the the revs go up and the car does not
move any more, there is no shuddering. The car is like new otherwise. Its
only when I put the gas down hard, I can drive away “normally” with no
issues what so ever. Any suggestions?

blazingtonight1 says:

i got a 98 ram 1500 in my shop and it had the front pump noise at idle and
as you drive it noise would get louder so i installed a new transmission
because fuild was burnt and 1st was slipping anywas, 3 days later it came
back for another noise from the transmission and what he says he’s hearing
is, between 20-40mph he hears a noise and a delay shift. once he gets past
40mph the noise goes away and drive good. i looked at data and test drove
it and for sure its doing what he said its doing, so i checked fluid level
and smell, look for leaks and even pulled the pan off to see if i had some
metal in the pan thats not normal nothing.

Excellent video!

Schrodingers Box says:

Disappointed you didnt go through the math formula for calculating the
torque! It would the first time i ever saw a practical application of a
cosine! Great video- I never seen this done before.

Jeffrey Bell says:

We would get along well. Good video.

Filmaker25 says:

I have somekind of lock-nut on the side of my transmission. I have 220,000
miles would there be any point in adjusting my transmission bands?

Ron Helmer says:

Very nice video. Very. Am retired and turned to drag racing as hobby with
son (talented mechanic) and Happened upon your video while searching for
more knowledge on adjusting my racing power glide reverse band after 50
passes. Was very much taken with your illustration and calculating
effective torque applied vs indicated when using extensions. 🙂 very well
said and illustrated … always wondered why son cautioned me when using
extensions, swivels, etc and torque wrenches :).

Tommy Smith says:

How would I figure out if a thm700h has the ability to adjust the bands?

Thank you for all your help. very interesting on your torque wrench
calculations. and your tool making process. execellent work. 2009 dodge 3/4

Joshua Sulwer says:

thank you! Hey I have a 02 dodge stratus R/T 3.0 V6 (mitsubishi eclipe) It
is stuck in 3rd gear fail safe mode. I replaced the speed sensors like the
OBD2 code suggested with no avail. could be bad sensors, because before the
speedometer was 20 miles over how fast i was going, now it doesn’t work at
all, but the wires are good, I swapped sensors back around to confirm
original symptoms. Also I can’t seem to reset the computer I know this
because the radio stations presets are still saved.

I just watched your video and really appreciate your teaching method and
clarity. I too own a dodge 01 V8 magnum 4W drive. I had my transmission
rebuilt about four years ago.Two or three days ago I noticed it slipped a
little in first gear, it has 231k miles. Anyway, i quickly changed the oil
and filter and there was no metal shavings in it. Two days later I felt it
slip again but it was over quickly. Do you think adjusting the bands will
take care of the slipping? If not what do you recommend? BTW, you earned a
subscription…thanks

Very informative, thank you!

can you not use a crows foot instead?

CHIBA280CRV says:

Great work , and thanks for the video you explain things clearly .

Benjamin Sides says:

Great video. Just enough detail and covers all the important aspects of
Automatic Transmission preventative maintenance.

What about the Ford auto trans adjustment bolt? Where is it, etc?

rob martin says:

Excellent presentation showing how to change the oil and Adjuster bands on
the Dodge transmission thank you very much!

Allen Young says:

Hi, i really like video and i have the same transmission and i am confused
on the torque setting for the trans. pan bolts i have heard 120in.lbs.
which is 13.6mn and i heard you mention 150ft.lbs. what will be the best
way to really get the best torque on the bolts to seal the pan without
causing bolt thread damage?

PETER MOSS says:

Hello lads
here,s one from the UK jack one wheel off the ground and if you have an
auto box with a drain plug drain from hot ,then start engine and just go
through the gears ,dont take longer than 10 seconds , turn off engine , you
will get more fluid out ,then put the plug back in and pour 2ltrs of white
spirit in to the filler run the engine and put it through the gears ,leave
to drain right out , your box will be cleaner than a cats RS ,i got a honda
accord with a baxa box in it and it now drives like a Rolls Royce ,

Always double check what fluid to use ,modern autos run hot and many like
fully synthetic fluid only ,dont cheap skate on the fluid check the
numbers make sure its correct ,check out forums and or Utube !

tradersnotion says:

Thank you for the video. An 8 point socket will fit the square headed
adjusting screws and can be purchased a from most popular tool makers. If
you can’t find an 8mm then use a 5/16″.

Ray Lucas says:

I’m looking to drop the pan and change fluid and filter on my ’96 Ram. I
was just wondering which fluid is better? ATF+3 or ATF+4? Or if it really
matters. Thank you for the video; already found it helpful.

B Witt says:

Damn good video!! Thanks!!

Paul Sheer says:

Hi! Great video. I wish I had watched it before I replaced my filter and
trans fluid! I didn’t know I was supposed to “adjust the bands” — what
are the consequences of *not* adjusting them? Do I need to go undoing all
those bolts all over again? BTW I have a cheep inch-lb torque wrench that
clicks when it gets to the set torque. So no need to look at a dial. This
is great for quickly torquing a dozen bolts — only takes a few seconds per
bolt. These wrenches are quite cheap.
Another question please: my gear lever is a bit sticky and sometimes does
not “take” when snapping from R into P — gear light just goes off. Is
this a switch not making good contact? Any tips?
Thanks!

Robert Gillogley says:

thank you spelunkerd, your video was very helpful.

H1-Trans says:

I really liked how you did this because I know how hard this can be. Thank
you for showig us how you dealt with the square bolt that was brilliant.

Jesse Tedder says:

Great video as always, keep up the good work. These tutorials are always
appreciated.

sleepingbear29 says:

Great video! I’m not sure I’m confident enough to do it myself, but if I
do, this video will be playing under the vehicle next to me.
