Strange problem considering what I found in the teardown. Input appreciated, what do you think? Happy Thanksgiving and have an awesome weekend everybody!

xephael says:

All the boat service manuals I've seen said to fill it from the top

Rodney Anderson says:

Just a thought, knowing that bolt would be the hardest to remove, it should be the first one removed. My thought here is that when you loosened the other bolts it moved all the tension to that hard to reach bolt. Too late now, but maybe in the future that situation will happen again in some other location.

I have the GV overdrive in my 79 F250 4×4 and love it…Certainly improves drivability on the highway and on rural roads. Not the same as your rig of course. I think the lack of parts support is due to the overall reliability of the unit. The sprag clutch and output bearing seemed pretty worn. Just replacing those would buy you a little time but the planetary and clutch surfaces would be next and likely, when rebuilt by GV, the case is the only part carried forward and everything internal is new. Oh, I found the engagement/disengagement of the unit to be clutch-free (though it took me awhile) if up-shifting, easing up on the throttle and engaging works smoothly. On down-shift, giving a little throttle is the key. Thanks for the content, always enjoyable.

Ir Vulture says:

I vote, Bad Solenoid… They have a tendency to get sluggish when they get old / worn out.
Seems to me, a slow response would make the unit get stuck between gear ratios.

Gerard Prins says:

Never start the rotating spray nozzle for pressure washer in an upward position always point it down , the nozzle inside the head will get damaged

Norman Buchanan says:

I think you did a pretty good job of explaining seeing you didn't know much about it but we were learning together very interesting, all I can say is you're a braver man than me tearing into such a complex part you know practically nothing about and explaining so good on you, great job great video.

Golf bravo Whiskey says:

Ha ha. Man anything with the four links suspension Dodge Chevy and Jeep have been doing the death wobble since the 90s.
My ford is terriable, I can almost spot the bump in the road when it's gonna do it. But my Chevy 3500 with A arm suspension is smooth as glass.

gatekeeper65 says:

Intermittent makes me think electronic, not innards. I'm thinking the solenoid, or its connections.
In either case, you've got that covered. Nice work. Take care sir.

Milton Jimenez says:

I wonder there is not a better differential with better ratios to fill you need ? just a question !!!!!!!!

George Tarabini says:

Is that lift like one of your best purchases?

coolchef09 says:

i wonder if you could call the company and ask them what was wrong with the old one when they refurb it.

Tons of play on the planetary gear set Bearing going out 45:43 @FarmCraft101

Chris Watts says:

Hey John. That looks a lot like a Laycock de Normanville J-type overdrive with some application specific housings and shafts – now owned by GKN I think. I have some experience with them in my Landrover Defender where they have a reputation for being unreliable. Most parts are readily available in the UK, you could try anyone dealing with British sports car transmissions as they were popular in Triumph, Jaguar and others.

65 FSTBK says:

BTW it is another great video.

65 FSTBK says:

My guess would be something to do with oil pressure. You did show us how the pump is driven and how it engaged the planetary but what is the pressure was inconsistent or low? It seems to me that it worked the first time but on the 2nd attempt it locked up. Could that cause the clutch/planetary to get caught in the middle? In addition, it seems to me that that little pump spinning on that eccentric gets to moving pretty fast and all the time.

Antonio Claudio Michael says:

Splined Shaft Aka Slip Yoke Jon 17:10 @FarmCraft101

Gilbert Nowak says:

Check your Pinion retainer on the rear Diff…Dodge had a Recall on those Trucks because the Bolts would work theit way out and Lock up the rear end and Shear the Bollt off!!!!!

Antonio Claudio Michael says:

I think it's the Sprag Clutch isn't releasing and the over drive unit is getting stuck in drive and overdrive at the same time and a good transmission shop or good transmission rebuilder can source the clutch for the over drive unit and doing a Unloaded Test like it being on the Lift is not going to Provide adequate information on whether the new fluid is helping or not because there is no weight on the wheels or the axle so none of the drive train Is loaded Jon when a open diff is off the ground and spinning under load it dosent always force both wheels to spin the same direction the spiders need to be engaged like the truck is on the ground driving forward @7:40 @FarmCraft101
