Make Your Own Differential Bearing Preload Wrench For Adjusting Backlash on a Chrysler 8.25 9.25

Here is the tool which is called a Differential Bearing Preload Wrench and you can buy it for 50 bucks, or you can make your own like I did for $2.37:

From what I understand, this tool will work for the Chrysler 8.25 as well as the Chrysler 9.25. It may also work for others.

Let me know if you have any questions as I’m happy to help!

Doing this right now . . .
I don't have a nut that big, so I'm welding 1/8" plate all the way around the biggest bolt head in my junk can and it comes out to right at 36mm.
The bolt is going to be welded directly end to end with 1/2" rebar that's been wire wheeled down to shiny and spun around the belt sander to give those rebar curls a nice smooth feel.
On the end of that I'll weld on a 1/2" drive 1/2" socket (an extra / sacrificial socket).

It'll be one piece from end to end 32" long (so I don't have to stretch any further than necessary to reach it while rotating the ring gear for play).
And best of all, it'll be a nice solid tool to add to my collection and save me $150 too.

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚
There's a hint in there for you dude, if you haven't already . . . stretch yours with some rebar and make it one piece. You'll be glad you did.

Nice video too sir.
Thanks

Dave Brown says:

A length of 3/4 black steel pipe and a standard 3/4 to 1 1/2 hex bushing (with a washer glued or tacked on behind) will also work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlCamOSJEXs

Alex Cruz says:

Where did you bought the nut

Rob King says:

The correct nut size is 36mm then you won't have to grind it down.

minimonkey969 says:

Use this same size threads with a lock nut… its the perfect size no grinding needed and then weld a socket to it

Michael G says:

Thanks brother!

N. Randall says:

Great camera!
I used a 1inร— 1/2 threaded nut and a 3ft piece of threaded gas pipe with another 1by 1/2. For about 18 bucks. Yours is way cheaper. Wish I would have seen your video first.

TheRolfano says:

So what did you actually use? Is that a nut you pressed into the socket?

T.K. Autowerkz says:

A 36MM CV AXLE NUT works perfectly!! and one of my spark plug sockets also was the perfect size for a press fit into the nut i had lying around in my nuts and bolts bin.

OTC 6602 Differential Bearing Preload Wrench. Advanced Auto, Walmart and Amazon can ship it. Amazon and Walmart were the cheapest. Sucks to buy the tool, but I'm glad for no shims!

Jeepster 09 says:

Great tip! Thank you!

metalmaniaxx says:

Does this work to remove the carrier as well?

Mitchell Hayes says:

What an awesome idea! With it you can go to a junkyard and easily grab a posi unit if need be or work on your own axle at home. Thanks for posting this.

Watupal says:

What did you torque those carrier bearings to? Did you check your backlash while Tightening back and forth?
