I had the same noise on my 2005 Town n country touring van, and my husband changed our alternator and now the noise is gone. Van is running a lot stronger. I took the alternator in and, even tho it test good and passed two test. We still changed it and my husband believed it was the bearing inside the alternator or the brushes in there. But, we still decided to change it due to the comments left on this video. Thank You to everyone who left a comment….. EXCITED the noise is gone….
But make sure it got the Pulley on it, you can damage many other belt driven components if its replaced with a standard pulley. Its their for a reason you know
Dealer told me it was the compressor and wanted…wait for it…$1,000 to fix it. I said no thanks. This was three years ago.
Mine used to make that noise. It stopped and then started making cricket noises. Maybe I’ll take it off and grease it. Not worth it to me to fix it just because the noise.
What kind of grease can we use?
also, $70 for pulley and another $60-70 for specialty tool? no thanks, just get new alternator with lifetime warranty. swap out is literally 30min job.
Thank you youtube and all commenters below. we have 2005 t&c with 140k on the 3.8 and I thought that noise was water pump. sure enough threw a $180 ultima alternator from o’reilly’s with a lifetime warranty and noise instantly gone. on to the next 140k!
My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan was making same noise when I turned on AC. Replaced alternator, and no more awful noise. thanks for posting!
My 2005 Chrysler Town and Country makes the exact same noise. As Jason says below it sounds a lot like a Diesel engine at idle, but goes away when your driving. Thank you for this video. Now off to replace Alternator clutch pulley.
My 2005 caravan is making this sound too. I think it sounds like a diesel… Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this video. It saved me lots of time troubleshooting.
Unfortunately I could not remove the failed OAP from the alternator to replace it. I tried penetrating oil, heat, turning it clockwise before counter-clockwise, etc and it never budged. Eventually I used a huge cheater bar until the special tool rounded off the hex head of the alternator shaft. I ended up replacing the whole alternator.
Thanks for posting. Wish I knew before I changed the alternator that I could get the pulley as a separate part. The way I found the source of the noise was actually seeing (and hearing) the alternate still turning right after the engine was turned off. What a horrible noise! I put up with this noise for two years thinking it was AC clutch and not wanting to get involved in fixing that. Ultimately, alternator replacement took me 3 hours, I should have done it when I first heard the noise.
Just remove the alternator pulley cap and clean it with a air compressor, add some grease and re install the plastic cap, voila no more noise for free!!!
Cap can be removed making a small hole with something pointy and sharp, cover the hole with glue before re install.
Thank you so much. This is the exact thing that was happening to my 05 Grand Caravan. Bad pulley bearing. Just replaced the entire alternator as mine is 9 years on the original. You can spin the pulley with the belt off and see the wobble. Thanks again.
Wow, I sure wish I would have searched for your video !!!!! I’ve changed the water pump Again it’s on it’s 3rd 67,000 miles have to lower the engine on the ’06 ! Power Steering pump & reservoir metal shavings ! Noise was still there “next is a new Alternator”! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!!
my i just replace it with regular pulley , working fine. $80.00 part n labor.
I have had the same time. My problem is that the alternator lasts 3 or 4 months and starts doing it again. I have replaced the alternator 4 times. Fortunately I just have to swap it each time and not pay for it. Unfortunately I am now looking for a better alternator to hopefully fix it for good.
Thanks for the upload, I think you have helped me identify the noise coming from my Sebring.
Your diagnosis was dead on. Same issue with my 2002 Chyrsler Town & Country 113K miles. Purchased an alternator clutch pulley on-line from American Engines Companyfor $68 and had the local alternator repair shop install for $130. Total cost $198. Firestone wanted $400 to replace the entire altenator and dealership would have been in excess of $500. to do the same. Altenator works fine, the clutch puley had simply rusted and deteriorated over time.
I just changed the pulley and worked fine, no need to change the whole alternator just the pulley…it worked on my wife’s T&C. Did you use the old pulley ? Get a long screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope (like the doctors use) and one end put your ear and the tip of the screwdriver on the alternator or the place you suspect the noise coming from…
i did change the whole alternator now the sound is back again, do i need another alternator or what?
thanks
Was there ever a response/answer given to this? My T&C is at the mechanic right now being looked at for this noise. I’d like to know what exactly was fixed on this vehicle to resolve the issue. Thanks!!
it was called overrunning clutch pulley which i dont have anymore since its welded now
my 2003 jaguar had that same issue the clutch pulley on the alternator was bad so i just welded the clutch pulley shut issue solved no more noise.
nice, this is the exact noise my van is making. Thanks for the help!!!!
You rock. I took this to 2 different mechanics and they couldn’t find it!
