John Olinger says:

How long is the wire going from the brake switch to where ever it goes? I
traced the wire up to directly behind the gauge cluster on the left hand
side. Is this where it was located for you? I have also test lighted that
wire directly at the switch and the light has power so that leads me to
believe that this is not my problem. I have checked all fuses and changed
the brake switch and the block under the back of the truck by the exhaust.
I have no other ideas. Any response with help would be awesome. Btw I drive
an 02 Tahoe so I guess it is a bit different.

David Rubio says:

I have the same problem on my 1997 Chevy Tahoe my brake lights wouldn’t
turn on when I push on the brakes so I assume that it was the brake light
switch but it wasn’t it was the wires that connect to the brake light
switch but I have figured out and did some research that it was too much
current going by the wires causing it to worn out … but I’m not sure if
this is a factory problem or I have a short somewhere

Wakuninnm says:

I was waiting to see where the cruise control switch is. I have a problem
w/94 silverado engine racing @2-2.5RPM’s in idle. I was thinking my cc
might be engaging. I had this problem last year. The mechanic told me he
disengaged the cc so it wouldn’t happen again.

wesleyrensch says:

How much of the wire do u replace

briansmobile1 says:

@kenman1717 Glad you liked it!

briansmobile1 says:

@thsbulk It’s likely this wire that’s burned up OR the control unit under
the hood. Ask around to see if some one knows a good local mechanic.
Usually the good one’s take a few days to a week to get into.

steve Icky says:

is that a factory problem or was that an add on?

briansmobile1 says:

@PWRSTR0KER2008 The 3″ piece I put in will last a few years. The whole
thing should be replaced, but the cost of repair is 20X more $ to replace
the whole wire back up the steering column.

briansmobile1 says:

Factory

clyde miller says:

Nice. I have a 2009 Chevy Silverado plain Jane work truck with only cruise,
a/c, and carpet. Manual everything else. 125k miles. Cruise control light
on the steering wheel comes on. The one by the odometer won’t when you try
to engage it. I tried the top off the brake fluid trick. didn’t work. Is
there a connection somewhere that could be loose? If you can tell me who to
call, I would appreciate it. I really don’t want to go to the dealer. I’ve
been the only driver. Thanks. thsbulk@aol.com

briansmobile1 says:

Use a pick or a special disconnect tool like in my connector repair video.
Replace 4″ of wire.

allan b says:

I have cruise control problem on Silverado. I heard about the switch, but
was not told about the wire gauge being too small. How do I get the cruise
control switch out for replacement? I tried torx, allen, phillips, flat and
pin punch. None worked. I looked in the little hole in the back of the
steering wheel where the cruise switch is located with a mirror, but can’t
see a head of any kind on the fastener. How do you remove the darn cruise
control switch on the steering wheel?

briansmobile1 says:

I’d remove the airbag and steering wheel to see if it’s doable. It’s not a
common repair for me. I’d have to have a hands on to be specific.

kenman1717 says:

great tip

jason hendrix says:

Ive got a 2000 chevy silverado, I also have no brake lights or cruise
control, replaced this wire so that it has a constant 12v and still
nothing, anyone gotta fix for this or have dealt with this? Thanks

allan b says:

The airbag has to be removed. That’s because the cruise control switch is
attached to a trim piece which is held in place by a bracket which holds
the horn/airbag assembly. Once the air bag is out the bracket has to come
out because the trim piece which holds the cruise control switch has these
little finger with holes in them to keep eveything in position. You get the
bracket out of the way and remove the electrical contacts for the horn and
the trim piece and switch finally come out. PITA.

briansmobile1 says:

Yes sir.

jay7264 says:

Great work that’s from all that radio control experience kicking in. Brian
is an awesome mechanic

briansmobile1 says:

Great question! The plastic got really runny and coated/burned onto all
over the metallic portion so it made poor contact. Taking it apart and
getting the metal out was the best way to heat it up and clean it off.

kenman1717 says:

@pberglin there are 2 studs at the front of the fuse box for stuff like
this. i work at a dealer and install lights and other accessories to these
studs. they are fused, but there may not be fuses in the spots. look at the
cover to see which fuse goes to which stud.

briansmobile1 says:

Check for a blown fuse

briansmobile1 says:

I bet it had something “vampire clipped” into it. It may have a broken or
mostly broken wire.

PWRSTR0KER2008 says:

So how long of a piece of wire is required to replace it? Just a little
chunk, or does it need replaced all the way to the fuse panel?

briansmobile1 says:

Maybe. You have to do some homework on your end by looking for the signs
described in the video (burnt white wire.)

allan b says:

I have the new cruise switch so I know it can be changed. I was trying to
avoid removing the airbag if possible. I don’t think removing it is going
to reveal anything since the airbag is in the center of the steering wheel
and the switch is on the left side. That’s a good tip about the small gauge
wire on the brake lite switch. The GM techs I talk to never mention that.
They just say:”Change the switch”, nothing about the wire.

briansmobile1 says:

Possibly. Look into it. See if it’s burned under the vampire connector that
is likely used.
