So, is there something wrong with the 4 wheel drive, or is the light just on? Thanks

Buckeye Dave says:

Bought the switch commercial online site Dorman brand $34 and the “Service 4×4” message immediately stopped on my 2001 Sliverado 2500HD 4×4. Changes as it’s supposed to and now the 2 Hi indicator light stays on as it’s supposed to. Thank you !!

I have a 04 Yukon and the 4WD switch shifting on its own. Every time I start it up I will find it either in Auto 4WD,Neutral,4L, or 4H. Sometimes the switch selector doesn’t come on at all and I get the “Service 4WD” message.. Most post I read said the 4WD selector switch may have gone defective. I ordered a new switch and it wasn’t even the problem so I took it to the dealer. It was the actuator encoder motor sensor (part#88962315). $400 later. The part is only $50 at GMPartsdirect(dot)com

Been getting the service four wheel drive message. Changed that switch and am still getting the message. What else could be the cause and what would the solution be?

Hi I have a 2004 Serrera and it is stuck in 4 wheel drive low. I try to switch it to 2 wheel drive or another drive and all it does is the lights on the buttons just blink and it does not try to shift. What do you think it could be ?

Da Marrio X says:

I had my transmission rebuilt in my 2001 Chevy Suburban and after picking up my truck the service 4wd light came on later that evening. It has been coming on and going off and I have went up to the shop I got it fixed it at and he told me to bring it back but I havent did it yet because the light comes on and then goes off. Im thinking about trying this and seeing if it fixes the issue. Thanks for posting this video

BBStudioProductions says:

@Gauge – yes it may fix your problem.

Gauge Kennard says:

My 01 silverado z71 did this today when I put it in auto 4wd and now it stays in auto 4wd and the service 4wd came up in the message center. Does this video fix this problem or is it something else?

Rachel Krueger says:

stupid question.. would this work in a chev 2001 silverado ? it looks the same lol

Chris Rapp says:

I was about to take my 05 tahoe to tje shop im trying this first thanks awsome video

My 05 ‘rado does this

BBStudioProductions says:

Did changing out the switch take care of the Service 4WD message?

BBStudioProductions says:

I wouldn’t unless you have money to burn. Read through some of the comments and you’ll probably find the solution. Worse case scenario, you by the new switch and it doesn’t fix the problem.

Raneisha Winchester says:

I have 99 tahoe i’ve had it a little over a year now and all of a sudden the error message popped up this weekend service 4wd any suggestions should i take it to a shop first

autocarventuri says:

Buddy, can you help me?
My 2004 suburban v8 has a strong stride when I change the selection of 4wd. When I change the 4×2 or 4×4 too high a hit occurs. Sometimes the change does not happen.
Do you think the problem is this switch?

Rex Ward says:

Nice, I have a 2004 Suburban that is giving me the “service 4wd” message. I have heard it could be “programming update”? Axle actuator, switch motor, or this. This seems to be the least expensive so I will probably start here! Thanks for showing me how easy it is! Have you ever had a steering wheel light go out? It has radio controls on the steering wheel and they are going out. I assume it’s about the same type of thing. Thanks.

studrider1 says:

H ey what was the problem i have this same issue

Terry Boykin says:

thanks think this wil work for me. Will try. Now it may sound odd but not sure how to take off the cover you removed in the video. I know you mentioned it is a bit difficult to put back in but no clue where to start to take it out. Are there screws someplace that hold it into place? where are they located
thanks nice video

Damn fuel lines.. I couldn’t get mine off and had to get help. Piece of crap plastic removal tool just wouldn’t work for me! Had it all off except that too. I had to replace the knock sensors.

tombrown03 says:

Is this the same for the HD trucks that don’t have auto 4wd in their switch units?

hit8iron says:

I had the same problem on my 2000 Suburban…took my switch apart and soldered the cracked joints…about 8 joints were cracked….ten minutes later problem fixed. Thanks for leading me in the right direction.
