had a Chevy equinox come in with some engine noise, thought maybe timing chain but turns out the fuel pump had gone kaboom!

I only have code P228D, which is for high pressure. Can you tell me what codes you had? My faults are excessive fuel consumption, jerking, and even shutting off when the rpm rises and falls.
The most curious thing about this is that it only takes about 40 minutes for the engine to warm up.
Direct injection, another EPA approved way to destroy your vehicles quicker. They say it’s to save the environment but every decision they forced results in cars being totaled, increased manufacturing (leading cause of pollution) and people being forced to buy new. EPA = planned obsolescence.
