AHF – 1998 4×4 blazer fix

AHF – 1998 4×4 blazer fix

Took it to a shop to get a rough idea of what it was… They said it was the vacuum actuator and cable, but it wasnt. Turned out to be a dry rotted vacuum li…

analog56x says:

im not really sure what its called to be honest… id think something like
vacuum actuator bracket or something like that would be close… ill see if
i can find out…

jeffsurround says:

@analog56x yeah, the diaphragm is fully contracted under vacuum. It does
not release, even with the car turned off, so it’s sealed and not leaking.
I didn’t see a vacuum canister.

analog56x says:

(1) put your finger on the end of the line too, and see if it sucks. if it
doesnt, trace the line back to the motor, and check for cracks or anything.
if you do hear the hiss, and feel the hose suck, it could be the little
tri-valve vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case… it might not be
seating properly, and could cause the vacuum actuator to engage when you’re
hard on the throttle… check those couple things, and let me know if you
find anything out… hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚ good luck!

Justin Morrison says:

I was told its a transmission pump, but for pumps or bearings, they arnt
intermittent if I’m in gear it should make the same sound as in neutral,
but its only when i accelerate and really noticeable in 1 and 2. 3, 4 and R
are pretty quiet. Like we discussed before you asked if was RPM based turns
out it is.

0541949526 says:

@analog56x hi? i’m having a problem with my 97 chevy ls blazer when i went
to dunes i got stuck with 2wd and when i put on neutral to put it on 4 high
the light turn on steady but the front tire wont spin i also tried it on 4
low the light turned on steady but still the tires on front wont spin
please help me pleas reply ๐Ÿ™‚

analog56x says:

@71odog its super easy to do man, just read all the other comments here ๐Ÿ™‚
everyone says how easy it is, now that they have seen how to do it! thats
why i made this video, so anyone can fix this themselves, instead of taking
it to a shop and getting charged a LOT!

analog56x says:

hmmm… bearings possibly…?

analog56x says:

wow man… ill think about it.

analog56x says:

i dont know of an easy way to replace that switch… haha, ive heard its a
royal PITA, but ive never had one go bad on me before, so i guess i was
lucky…

0541949526 says:

@analog56x yes i heard a clicking sound this blazer hasn’t been used at any
offroading place the 4wd hasn’t been used since the 1st owner bought it
brand new i am the 2nd owner of this blazer, if i put it on 4 low then i
put it on overdrive the engine is like very strong but the front tires
still won’t spin ๐Ÿ™‚

tengo una explorer 4×4 pero no enciende el 4×4 se activa con un boton se
activo el 4x4low pero ya se que do asi como le hago para desactivarlo

indybob says:

Does someone make a replacement actuator ? I went and tried to hear what
all was rely happening. Pretty sure it is actuator.

analog56x says:

@0541949526 i’d be willing to bet its either a rotten vacuum line, or a
seized cable then… to keep everything working, they recommend switching
in and out of 4wd periodically, just to keep cables and stuff from
seizing… though you would still get vacuum line rot, nothing prevents
that… the rubber just deteriorates over time being exposed to the
elements and such. hope this helps! good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

Justin Morrison says:

Dissapears.

analog56x says:

@dragonsage2008 haha, no worries. post up how ya made out with it ๐Ÿ™‚

analog56x says:

@erider1990 i bought one at the autowreckers i was working at. you could
try an autowreckers for a good used one… i just spent half an hour
looking at napa’s site trying to find the part with no luck…

dragonsage2008 says:

@analog56x 4×4 is all fixed thanks alot man was the cable and damn is 4 low
fun to play with haha fells grate to know i got my 4×4 back and running

analog56x says:

@dragonsage2008 cool. good luck bro! spread the word if this helped you ๐Ÿ™‚
i did this tutorial cause i couldnt find any good ones anywhere… none
that explain it good enough…

kevin melendez says:

this video is sweet. I heard when the vacume is an issue ud start hearing a
whining noise when driving. im deffinately gonna change this part to see if
this is my noise. U r my blazer god dude. im lookin forward to followin
more on your future blazer repairs.

analog56x says:

@jeffsurround what you could try doing, is pull the actuator off the axle,
and try to shift the fork manually. if its all tight and jammed, you might
have to take the diff completely apart and see what happened. have you ever
jumped the truck, or beaten on it?

dragonsage2008 says:

hey im haveing a prob with my 4×4 on my 99 jimmy i know 4×4 kicks in but
after this winter when i put it in 4×4 u can hear like a clunky gridy noise
from i think the front right u have any clue what this might be im going
try to replace my vacuum actuator prob this comeing thursday if thats now
what it would be pleas let me know

cbgreenbay says:

Have to watch the vacuum lines on your trucks guys. My 98 jimmy was giving
me codes -p0171, p0174, p0300, p0131 and p0151. It ran ok but sucked on gas
mileage. Found a rotted vacuum line on back of intake and now all codes are
gone (no light on dash) and it has much better gas mileage and more nice
smooth power. Took a chance on it and got it cheap from a woman who was
told it needed O2 sensors and a fule pump or spider injector or intake
gaskets. Was just a vacuum line that cost me $1 + tax.

analog56x says:

@allhunting thats great! glad it wasnt the diff! take care!

allhunting says:

my 2002 s10 zr2 goes into 4wd but does not stay in 4wd. the front drive
shaft spins to the front axle but the front tires do not pull. i replaced
accuator under the battery, and replaced part of the air line, but it does
not make a difference. the 4wd switch inside the truck shows it in 4wd and
never flashes back at me.I do not see the vacuum switch on the
firewall, maybe mine dsnt have one.it stays in 4wd for about 5 min then it
disingages. no noises coming from the front. new t case 6months ago

erider1990 says:

that three bolt triangle piece on the front diff needs to be replaced on
mine but i cant find it anywhere how did you get a new one.

MyT2000 says:

analog56x, Hey man, Thank you soooo much. you rock. you are deadly. i just
recently bought a 98 blazer for $500 because the 4×4 didnt work. the truck
is mint with only 145k on it. the guy parked it at his farm cuz his wife
needed 4×4 and it was “broken” after this video i went out and looked at my
actuator and the rubber was cracked and obviously not working. so for a
hundred bucks i bought a used one put it in and she works. 600 into it now
and its worth an easy $3500. you fuckin rock!!!!!!!!!!

rsamad0610 says:

Question for you – how were you able to tell that your 4×4 wasn’t working?
Cause right now my issue is that I can get into 4×4 LO, but I can’t get
into 4×4 HI – I have the electronic bush button control (2005 jimmy – base
model). I push 4×4 HI, it blinks, I hear a few noises from underneath, then
goes back to 2HI – any thoughts?

ariesnr1 says:

Thanks for this vid! When I push either 4wd hi or low it clicks a few
times. I can hear it click a few times inside the car from the Tccm (right
name?) and I can hear clicking under the car, a bit behind drivers seat. At
the same time the 4wd indicator lamp flashes, then it goes bak into 2wd. I
drove the car on fields with 4wd. Drove it home with 2wd. Washed it with
high preasure water. Perhaps I damage someting when I washed a bit under
the car? Also took out battery for 30 min, didnt help.

BIGW0RD says:

Hello, was your blazer stuck on 4×4 constant cuz i just bought a blazer
that problem and it would really help me out if you would let me now cuz
maybe i have the same problem you did thanks.

analog56x says:

would it happen when you are going full throttle, or pretty close? sounds
like a vacuum issue for sure. when i had my 92 s10 pickup, i removed the
vacuum canister (large ball with a vacuum hose going to it) for extra space
under the hood. any time i went up a hill or really stomped on it, i could
hear my HVAC control doors moving haha! they are vacuum operated. id check
your vacuum canister first. start the truck, and pull the hose off the
ball. you should hear a hiss as it sucks in air. (cont)

analog56x says:

@dragonsage2008 sounds like the cable is stretched and not fully engaging
the differential… that may also be caused by a weak vacuum actuator, or a
vacuum leak. if you have a vacuum gauge, measure how much you have at a
place where you know has good vacuum, then measure how much vacuum you’re
getting at the actuator. if they are the same, then i bet its the cable.
hope this helps, cheers!

Hugo Rafael Pรฉrez Mรกrquez says:

indybob says:

Mine will go into 4 lo but not 4 hi. Anyone have any ideas ?

bumperization says:

Why didnt you just seperate the acutator from the cable, and be done? Thats
all you would’ve had to do, its all that was bad.

analog56x says:

@MyT2000 thats awesome man! glad you can profit from it! i should look into
doing that haha! find a 4×4 blazer with ‘broken’ 4wd and fix it and flip
it! thats a good idea. cheers bro!

0541949526 says:

@doeboyinya610 it was the vacuum actuator the rubber that sorrounds it has
a hole

BIGW0RD says:

my 98 blazer is stuck on 4hi i connot get it to go into 2hi do you know
what might be the problem? also i cant shift to 4lo. there is a vacuum line
on top of the transfer case that had been plugged by the previous owner its
actually three lines in triangle formation but only one was plugged. i
unplugged it and now its on 4hi constant any help from anyone is welcomed,
thank you.

analog56x says:

@MegaBeNdeR420 is it a manual, or electric t-case? if its manual, i would
suspect that the pin or spring, or whatever keeps the shift forks in place
is worn out… if its electric, i would suspect that the shift motor is
worn out… even if its not been used, the parts inside the transfer case
are still moving. and most times, if the 4×4 mode on these trucks isnt
‘exercised’ (used every one in a while), the cable tends to seize up, and
your 4×4 doesnt work when you need it…

OILFIELDMONEY6 says:

can someone please tell me how to get the cable off the diff end!! Also i
cant seem to get the three hole bracket seperated from the diff either and
cant tell what its hanging up on thanks…..

analog56x says:

@jeffsurround your problem might be a little more complicated than that
then… you might have to open up your front diff and check for damage.
there is a shift fork in the front axle that the cable attaches to. when
the diaphragm sucks, it pulls the cable and slides the shift fork in the
axle. if i remember correctly, vacuum in the diaphragm = 4wd, no vacuum =
2wd. its been a while though…

dragonsage2008 says:

@analog56x ok thanks il try the cable cuz i know i ended up fucking that up
after this started to happen thinking it was a air hose lol

doeboyinya610 says:

@0541949526 have you fixed your truck if yes what was the problem im having
similar problems

WMSoftwareSales says:

@analog56x thanks. I replaced the cable and diaphragm. Now it does shift
below the front axle, but the transfer case doesn’t seem like it’s
disengaging the front driveshaft in the transfer case. My mechanic has
taken this project over as I have done what I can up front. Thanks for the
info and help – I passed it along to him.

Justin Morrison says:

Its rpm based doesn’t do it in neutral, was thinking pump but cant find a
fix on it, however after i take my foot on gas it feels like I’m pushing
something, so I thought my xfer case wasn’t disengaging even though theres
no codes/lights. Fluids are good. Colour and smell on ATF is good.

Justin Morrison says:

When in gear, gets louder the faster you go.

analog56x says:

tried looking it up on rock auto, and found nothing… sorry man, if you
need one, maybe go to a local junk yard, and ask for the bracket at the end
of the cable that attaches to the axle?

bumbasticco says:

thanks man … now i know where to check.

analog56x says:

@90jda ummm… if i had to take a wild guess, i’d be guessing that your
vacuum cable has stretched, and isnt fully disengaging your actuator… OR
the vacuum actuator could be weak and not pulling the cable enough… the
cables do tend to stretch over time… hope this helps! cheers!

analog56x says:

RPM based only when not in neutral… that right there makes it really
confusing! so your truck has a whining sound coming from the engine bay,
but ONLY when youre in a gear… ha, just thought of something… does it
kinda drone when you’re going faster, like highway speeds? sounds like it
could be a wheel bearing to me… is it RPM based, or speed based?
