97 Chevy Tahoe DIY- How To Replace a Power Steering Gear Box

Next in a series of repairs I’m making to my 1997 Chevy Tahoe. This thing was about impossible to keep on the road, much less in a straight line. Time for a new (remanufactured) steering gear box.

Tejas Techman says:

I have a 1996 GMC YUKON.and I had to replace the gearbox , pitman arm , inner tie rod end, stabilizer bushings and I still had wheel slack. I found that the intermediate shaft joint or also called rag joint was worn and their was about 1/4 – 1/2 in. slack at the joint. I replaced the rag joint and also adjusted the gearbox adjusting screw on top of the gearbox clockwise no more than 1/2 turn max. Adjust by 1/8 increments until it feel right to your truck. Hope this helps anybody reading comments.

I just change the gear box on my 99 Yukon! My only concern is that my steering wheel is too stiff. Did I do something wrong?

Christina Coloradoan says:

I have a 1998 Tahoe, is it any different from your '97? Should the pitman arm be changed since the other work is being done?

Great info Kenneth, I didn't know you were a mechanic. You did a good job of explaining everything.

Tony Perih says:

Did the play in your steering go away?

Chris Adams says:

Yes sir ,did that numerous times. until fluid stayed full and was good and clear. thanks for your advice, I fixed the problem by putting another pump on, even though the one I took off I just replaced two years ago, but replacing it again fixed the problem, guess it was not pumping enough pressure. thanks again.

Chris Adams says:

I replaced the steering gear box on a 95 Sierra, but it doesn't work, I took it off and returned it and got another rebuilt one, it's not working either, it seems fine when jacked up, but on the ground there's no power steering, pump is pumping fin, any suggestions?

dee birdez says:

I'm replacing my 95 box tonight (it was a reman. that was leaking), I found if you take the bolt off higher up on the steering connection and use the same process of vise grip, you can drive it down then the whole unit comes out. Replacement is just opposite. It does help with that dang plastic cover alignment.

txsviking says:

That will be good for 20 more years. Good work KT.

Way to go Kenny, I have been thinking of buying a pitman arm puller but they are free to use from advance auto but their tool are pretty ratty from all the people who use hammers to adjust the pitman arm when they pull then lol, You know I am being sarcastic lol Good seeing you bro 😉

Nice work buddy! I had a 2000 Yukon and that thing always floated down the road, even brand new. I never liked driving it on the freeway. My Flex is so much more solid in that regard.

ceedell says:

Gotta love steering and chassis work! Loved the out takes! lol

I always use a pitman arm puller. Sometimes there still hard to get off.
