I would have bent it back down to its factory position.
Just a warning. There is a mention of greasing the drive shaft yoke. Don’t
do this if you own a 4×4. Grease can leach into the transfer case and ruin
it. 4×4 should only use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) to lube the yoke
going into the case. See GM service bulletin online. Just my 2 cents.
Good eye. Should’ve just bent it back into shape.
Tape? I think washers or spacers would have been better. No?
My 2005 cheve truck makes a taping sound when it warms up
My noise sounds more like a bucket of marbles that goes away when I hit the
brakes. Thoughts?
That noise on the skid plate sounds like the bolts are not tight.
Handsome truck you got there.
Good call, I’m gonna have to take a look at those on my 05.
I have style truck 09 though, Crew Cab With silverbirch metalic. And I love
you for this video, I took my truck twice to the dealer for the clunks, and
all this because a piece of metal hitting the transmission from the
outside. You my friend are the BEST!! Subbed!
Whats the clearance between the plate and case? could you put a couple wine
corks in there and tighten plate so it can’t rattle?
Chevrolet poor designs result in buyers fixing things haha! My 02 z71 does
this same thing
.. Continued…Consider bending this skid plate down at an angle great
enough to prevent contact between the two surfaces in any situation ranging
from torque or rough terrain. This skid plate may actually act as a
flat-head shovel in off-road situations while the vehicle is navigating in
reverse out of an obstacle/obstruction. This may lead to greater issues.
Thus, I would recommend keeping it nice and snug to the t-case. Also, there
is a groove in the TC that the plate is designed to rest in.
thats actually a skid plate that is included in your Z71 package it
protects your transfer case from hitting on rocks or mounds or anything
when your offroading hard or crawling over stuff. I have a 94 z71 and it
makes this noise too but my skid plate does not even come close to touching
my transfer case, i believe it is slop in the ring gear in the differential
or just my tranny going bad (226,000 miles)
My 94 f150 makes a clunking noise when shifting in reverse or drive from a
dead stop. Mine is 2wd though
How about extra washers to sandwich them between the chassis and the plate?
Of all the comments a girl has the best and most obvious answer on here. No
offense with the “girl” comment, but yea, just bend it down it got knock to
close. easy peasy!
Gona check mine also gota clunk 2000 Z71 Step Side Hope thats all it is
130000 miles
Wow, I’ve got an 06 Z and it’s done the exact same thing for years; I just
went and crawled up under it to confirm the same noise and setup; tomorrow,
I’m going to take the shield off and try to bend it about 1/4″ or so, to
get it away from the trans housing- hoping that’ll take care of my noise to
as it drives me nuts!
Hi Steven, how’d that go for you?
Sweet truck bro. Good fix
It’s a nice truck, I got one too. It also makes noises when I put it in
drive but I don’t accelerate. It makes like little rattling noise. It could
be the cover that protects the transmission and engine
put a spacer on the screw at the other side of the shield
It has been approximately 8 months since i performed this modification, and
I have not even heard the slightest noise associated with this problem.
There are several possible remedys for this poorly designed skid plate to
transfer case union. Bending the skid plate away(down) from the transfer
case may sound like a simple solution but may negate the functionality it
was designed to achieve. See next post.
I just bought a 07 z71 2wd I hear the same noise drives me nuts I’m gonna
try this
torsion bar mount bushings will let it make a chunk when you drive slow
also . my 04 1500 chevy does it . fyi
obviously hit something and bent the skid plate up, how about just bend it
back down to where it is suppose to be.
