Thanks for posting the how to; it was incredibly helpful. Could have used a
vid on how to remove the spindle but I figured it out. This job takes a lot
of patience. Having all the right tools is also very important. Cheers.
Thanks for posting this video. I just finished the uppers and lowers today.
I highly recommend to do both at the same time. It’s also a good time to
check your axles/boots. You’ll have it all apart anyhow.
Also, spend the money on quality ball joints. The cheapo ball joints tend
to not fit well. Advance sells Moog. They also have nice ball joint kit you
can use for free. Saved a ton of time and cussing.
i just did this on my 02 envoy, and the press simply did not work, i think
the cheapo ball joints i got were a sliver bigger then normal bj’s. but
after several hours of cursing i put a jack underneath the ball joint with
the nut on it (lower bj) and beat the control arm down on it until i could
fit the snap ring on. ball joints are not fun, not looking forward to the
other side.
correction, this weekend trailing arms, next weekend track bar, then ball
joints and tie rods.
Oh yeah; great video!
I do it slightly different. I leave the tierod and axle still in the
knuckle and let it dangle, use an air chisel and go around the top of the
ball joint with a sharp bit, then get a BFH (48oz ball peen works great)
and smack the living heck out of them ball joints. Only takes a few
minutes, then press the new ones in, reassemble and you’re ready to roll.
Don’t forget to properly torque your axle nut to help with bearing life.
Yes, I bought the balljoint kit from Harbor Freight for a hundred bucks,
ouch… The labor itself took about 4 hours, but the project took me
slightly longer because I had no guidance.
Metallica!! m/
The upper edge of the factor ball joint is ‘swaged’ with a die press,
instead of having someone go thru the hassle of putting a circlip into a
groove. The guy on the assembly line likely has a special hydraulic tool
handy, lines it up, WHAMMO the ball joint is locked into place. It’s
probably faster, and less fiddly than the traditional circlip for the
assembly line worker, which means less of a chance of getting it wrong.
Having trouble with upper ball joint. What size socket did you use to press
the ball joint back in?
Did you buy the ball joint kit for the job? How long did the job take you?
I plan on doing both sides upper and lower plus outer tie rods on my pos
2002 Bravada and has to be done in one day due to us being a one car family
with 3 punks that need to be driven around daily. .
The sound keeps cutting in and out. But thanks for the video.
100 bux aint bad concidering if you buy each part individually it cost way
more. I am pretty good at this kind of stuff but this truck is really
testing my patience. My air ride system shit the bed in January so instead
of replacing the bags and the compressor I converted it over to shocks and
springs ( much cheaper and rides better IMO), had to do the job on the
sidewalk because I don’t have a driveway or garage, bout froze to death.
Anyway, thanks for the reply, doing trackbars this weekend.
Outstanding video!! I hade no idea about needing to chisel out the lower
ball joint. Thanks!!
Great vid! Pep Boys wants $300 just for labor. Bought Envoy new in 2003 and
have 165k on it. I have been doing alot of much needed maintence and your
video sure helps. Thanks!
Hilarious how much easier they come out if you take the circlip out isn’t
it? I’ve done that too!
