Excellent information.

Toughy says:

Excellent walk-through! I just got a 1990 soft tail evo and the choke
wasn’t staying put – and I didn’t realize the choke was actually just an
enricher. This answers a lot of questions.

Aaron Warren says:

And a happy choking to you too!

CatholicCrossBearers says:

Thank You! An Ironhead and Shovelhead man from way back, I had no clue how
to change the cable on my new evo sporty….you have helped greatly!

hoohoohoblin says:

15 or 20 bucks depending on the length and the brand you buy. Mine was made
by Drag Specialties and cost $14.99.

hoohoohoblin says:

You’re welcome! I’m glad the video helped. It’s a fairly easy job.

hoohoohoblin says:

Yes. Once it is maxed out, it is time to replace it. Might as well do the
gaskets in the carb while you’re in there.

hoohoohoblin says:

Yes. It sounds like you need a new cable. When you tighten the tension
adjuster, it puts pressure on little plastic tabs that press against the
choke cable. Eventually they wear down, and then no matter how tight you
tighten the tensioner, the cable still slips.

How much does a cable cost new approximatly

hoohoohoblin says:

I turned off the fuel with the petcock lever. There should be an off
position on the petcock.

hoohoohoblin says:

You’re welcome. I’m glad the video helped.

You’re welcome! This video hasn’t gotten many views yet, but I was sure

at 8:53 you said thicker screws……….did you mean threads ???????

JMC2543 says:

Hope you didnt pay that much for the part. It only runs for about $20 from
J&P Cycles

larrythelurker says:

thank you for making this video- my suzuki choke cable is very similiar to
the one you worked on. The shop has a two month waiting period and you
helped me to do this in a couple hours!!

hoohoohoblin says:

The choke cable isn’t a true choke, but rather an enrichener, which means
that pulling it all the way out ads more gas to the mixture. It’s possible
that when you took the carb apart, you didn’t adjust the idle mixture
properly. There is a screw on the bottom of the carb, which you can unscrew
to enrich the idle mixture. Once the bike is warmed up, you could try
turning the screw out a turn or so and see if it stays running.

You’re welcome!

tinman12822 says:

A buddy and I took the carb off of my 1992 883 and cleaned it the other
day. Later on I fired it up and it ran well but for some reason I have to
now have the choke all the way out in order for it to stay running. He was
only in the state for a little while and left before I realized this issue.
Any suggestions. Is there a way to adjust the cable so it will work
properly or is it screwed up?

hoohoohoblin says:

You’re welcome.

knows noone says:

It helped me so much, i tried to turn my tensioner on the choke that u said
to try first but it was so hard i couldnt turn it left or right. should i
try some channel locks on it? the cable pulls out then ggoes about 3/4 of
the way back in by its self and stops, im thinking it just needs a new
cable. its a harley 883 sportster. a 1991

knows noone says:
