Fixing A Car That Shuts Off Randomly

Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 45 years, shows how you can fix a car that just dies randomly as you drive down the road. It’s often a worn fuel pump if…

MY car takes the cake, it runs great! Then it just shuts off when I start
it. I start it again and I have to hold the gas pedal for it to stay on and
it does! but as soon as I let go of the gas pedal it shuts of again. If I
wait for about 45 minutes the car will start normally though. Its done
this twice in 8 months. Any ideas?

3.8 Series II, Year 2000. No check engine, I have scanned the computer, it
shows no issues, car runs great other wise.

DE Nichols says:

2000 Chevy Prizm LSI…I lie a bit, it’s a 1999, but it has the full engine
setup of 2000.

LTFT 17% (Short term is just going a little negative and positive) maybe a
little less at 25 MPH and and 17% LTFT to 30% with the STFT trip added at
40/45 MPH cruising.

I’m feeling good about my MAF since it fried and I replaced it (got a code
with it too that cleared up P0100 and/or P0101). I’m thinking it’s not
leaking fuel injectors or a bad fuel pump. Sure it’s correcting for a
“Lean” condition, but when I rev it up the O2 sensor still doesn’t go fully
rich (just to .6). Plus, it smells really rich when I rev it from a parked
position (smell from the exhaust).

The O2 sensor usually could go rich just a couple drives earlier, but I’m
not seeing good stoichiometry up and down. Sometimes it’ll just go slightly
rich and slightly not rich, hovering like an fuel/air wideband sensor. If
this is a bit confusing, I think I watched it go bad on my way home.

I want to condemn the O2 sensor. When my scanner says I’m in closed loop
the engine still tries to go rich likes it’s cold, even if the coolant is
at 95 degrees C.

No codes at this time, I just use my live scanner a lot so I noticed all
this even after a good warm up drive.

Ah, one more odd thing this upriver o2 sensor does, it occasionally bombs
below .1 and I’ve never seen that before, I don’t think it’s supposed to do
that.

Masterpkerko1 says:

so my cars keeps turning off… and the fuel pump is working i can see and
no codes show up what should i do ?

shawtie muahz says:

First time my truck shut off while reversing second time while driving out
of a parking lot. But the radio still plays i turned it of and started it
up again with no problem. .what could it be?

ZL1Gimpelson says:

Scotty, my car is a 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera and it has just recently started
to randomly die on me. Once it does though it fires right back up with no
trouble and continues to drive on. The only factor that is the same is that
the gas tank is between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank every time. Could it be a
problem with the fuel pump not registering the fuel?

phillies4100 says:

2005 Chevy Cobalt with a new ignition still has issues tho in the fact that
the key gets stuck in the ignition and in order to turn the car off all the
way you have to wiggle the key, how to fix?

Mark Jenkins says:

My avalon just recently started to not accelerate from a red light, the
vsc, trac, engine, and brake lights came on and the speedometer needle goes
up and down when that happens. It usually happens starting from a dead
stop, it feels like its going to go, and the power just cuts out.It docent
stall or anything but it feels like someone let go of the gas and applied
the brakes for an instant. On the freeway the lights sometimes come on then
go away but the braking part docent happen while on high speeds. Any help I
would appreciate thanks.

Brenndon McGill says:

Sweet vid Mr. Kilmer! I once had an 03 Cavalier that died randomly, I
replaced the fuel pump and still did it. Turns out after multiple attempts
of diagnosing, the fuel pump relay socket terminals were spread and weren’t
making proper contact… Touché car lol I noted that to myself..

2jz101 says:

Scotty i have a problem that my car randomly shuts off sometimes when its
warm and doesn’t start and i will have to wait 1 hour or more for engine to
cool down and start it again , i hooked up fuel gauge my fuel pressure is
fine, spark plugs i changed them two weeks ago. Thanks.

Andy Pacheco says:

Very informative video. This is exactly what’s going on with my old car. I
want to try fixing it myself but will just leave it to the pros. At least I
know where to look at. Many thanks to you sir!!

raven jackson says:

My car will stop for a second here and there, it shut off completely once.
I just changed the distributor cap and rotor, had to unclamp my air filter
box to gain access to the cap. Drove fine for about an hour until the check
engine light came on and then the car started acting up. Any idea what I
might of done wrong?

Erklins says:

My car is a Honda Civic. When it gets up around 50-60 it sometimes shuts
off and bucks a lot then sometimes it is fine . What could this be ?

Nadina Corbitt says:

Hello , i have quite the same problem. I am stumped and dont know what to
do. I have a 97 eclipse and i have had the tps, mas sensor, fuel pump,
alternator fixed over the span of a few months. The last big repair was the
alternator. A shop told me the car shut off because of that about 4 months
ago. I changed all the sensors that had codes. The engine light is still
on. When i had the shop check the light it wouldnt even read the car’s
computer at two different places. So does this mean it’s the ecu for sure.
The basically now stall when im at a stoplight and it will stall on the
highway with the music still playing on my radio. If it was an electrical ,
fuel, or air problem would the music, headlights, wipers. Anything thats on
woyld still be functioning. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it. Its
been too confusing. Thank you for your time.

nam le says:

It is a great help tip. However I have 2002 Mitsubishi Galant it dies
randomly when it is slow down or at the stop light without trouble code. I
had clean the the throttle body few time and replace Idle Air Control 2
times now it is not die randomly any more, but the idle speed is drop below
700 that caused the engine shake very badly. Any advice.

j12torts says:

Hi Scottie car stalls and dies on idle. But ok at higher speed. Mitsubishi
pajero (montero) 1991 3.0L V6

I adjusted the timing on the distributor idle went fine to normal 700rpm
but it still dies. Thoughts? Distributor? Ignition coil? Fuel pump? Or a
leaky vacuum hose? I don’t know anymore

2004 Buick Regal LS

Hey Scotty, The car is acting up all the time. It shuts off while I’m
driving, sometimes it won’t start up after leaving it overnight, sometimes
just removing the e-brake causes it to shut down after a long time of
warming up. Sometimes turning off anything in the car will cause the car to
shut down with no warning. But sometimes I get lucky when I warm it up for
a while, it runs just fine. Any ideas on whats going on?

Ruochen Zou says:

2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT model,
The car has been having the radom miss fire code all the time, I wasn’t too
worried about it until recently, it always turns off infront the redlight
after a lone highway drive at high RPM and all the lights come on(battery,
break, SES etc.). It restarts fine and never happened in citydriving. any
ideas where should I start?

SERGIO ALVARADO says:

Hi Scotty, this video is amazing. I have some questions. I have a 2006 VW
Jetta that randomly dies, battery is new , it starts with no issues when is
a cold start, but after 5-10 minutes the car just dies and have to wait
about 10 minutes to cool down in order to be able to start it again, if i
try to start it again before it cools down it feels like an electric
problem ,because it DOESNT even make the crank noise, and minutes later
after it cools down it will starts with no problems, any clue ?

John ming says:

but scotty , you forgot to mention a plugged fuel filter ill cause bad fuel
pressure too

thesniperofcs says:

Hi , i have Subaru Legacy 1998 with OBD1 system , there is no check engine
light and when i tried the way to check it shows nothing , i have replaced
the air filter and cleaned the throttle body and the MAF sensor , it burns
alot of gas and runs bad , sometimes it runs like a turtle , bad exhaust
smell like carbon monoxide (CO1) and carbon dioxide ( CO2) with a few white
smoke comes out rarely , i am sure the engine is working perfectly and it
has no problems in pistons , cylinders and transmission , the air intake is
nice in place and all hoses and plugs are connceted perfectly even the
battery cables , the only problem is valve cover gasket leaks engine oil
about half liter per week and i will fix it soon , it cuts a little bit
while accelerating with pedal on the floor , the problem the and smell
increase when the AC is on

need help, 1989 nissan 300Zx n/a just bought the car and when I was driving
it and put my foot down it went all the way to redline and just shut off
that was it, I pulled over cranked it a few times it would crank but not
fire left the car for 2 to 3 mins and it started again, I was thinking
maybe the alternator or belt is gone and isn’t charging the system properly
or something along those lines but I have honed no idea, what would you
guys reccomend to check

enrique marisca says:

Hi Scotty I have a 85 camaro its a v6 2.8. The check engine light comes on
after driving it for a while and once it comes on I have to always keep my
foot on the gas or else it dies. I tried taking it to a shop to see if they
could find the problem but they couldn’t. What could be the problem?

HI Scotty Kilmer, My 05 Corolla S has shut off and turned back on numerous
times. I cleaned TB changed plugs and put new battery. Same engine in this
video I believe. I want to check fuel pressure but don’t know where to
attach the pressure gauge line. Also, the rpms seem to fall when I turn
lights on and click windows to go up and down.

Anne-Sophie Sayman says:

Hello… I just bought a 1960 Sunliner and when the car heats up, at some
point, the engine dies… It starts again after letting the car cool down a
little. I was in heavy traffic right before it for a few blocks and before
that in middle traffic. I had driven for about 2 hrs when it happened.
Right when I finished passing the heavy traffic spot. After it started
again, the car died 3 times more… But the gauge was in the “same area”…
So I am puzzled.. Any thoughts?
Many thanks!!!

My 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 keeps shutting down hot. Replaced the fuel
pump and crank sensor..My auto start stopped working also.I dissconected my
battery and as soon as I hooked it back up the truck tried to start..Any1
with a brain would assume it has something to do with the remote starter
not working..After 2 grand and nothing to show but brakes and new parts.(I
DIDN’T NEED) I’m upset..Any thoughts???Thanks.

My 01 montero sport cut off on me sunday while I was driving. I pulled it
in a empty parking lot and noticed it was over heating I let it sit started
it back up less than a mile later in cut of on me again but after letting
it sit it wouldn’t start up by the time by mother in law got almost 30
minutes had passed she said it sounded like I needed a charge she gave me a
jump and it turned over. I got it home and after a couple hrs I went
outside to see it the cables was loose they weren’t but I tightened them a
lil more. I had my neighbor give me a jump so I could check the battery and
alternator. With the jumper cables still connected and both cars running
the meter read 12.80-12.90 something with the cables disconnected the meter
read still read about 12.90 and some changed when I revved the engine a lil
passed a 1000 rmp the meter read 13.20 and some change. I figured both
alternator and battery was good cut the car off and went in the house
monday morning was leaving to goto school car wont start meter read 10.87.
What could my problem be? Battery alternator fuel delivery, I was also low
on anti freeze cause my tank is leaking not sure it anti freeze plays a
part.

Hey Scotty, I have a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner. When I start it it sounds like
it’s not going to starts but it does every time. It does turn off on me
when I floor it and leave it floored for a couple of seconds. This happens
when I want to merge onto the freeway quickly with the flow of traffic. I’m
moving with the flow off traffic when all of a sudden I’m losing speed
quickly and all of the lights on the dash are on. I need to pull over and
put it on park and give it gas so it starts up again. This only happens
when I floor it merging onto the freeway. Fuel pump?

04 acura tl, shakes then shuts off at stop light, or when driving really
slow (0-10 mph) any ideas
thnx,

VictoriaGonzales says:

my car would shut off when i would try to make a complete stop. My 96 mazda
would shake then cut off. Whats weird is if it give it a little gas before
i do a complete stop before the rpm drop low my car wont shake or stall.
sometimes if i put the car in neutral it who stall. Now all of a sudden my
car wont accelerate but reveres fine. its like the car kicks in and goes
then the rpms goo really high near the red zone area , when it does that i
losen up the throttle to lower the rpm and it does not move, the car goes
like 5mph, this happened before and i looked in the engine area and
slammed the hood when i was down and the car was back to normal. there is
no check engine light on now and no codes. but before all this happened
every-time i would go past 45 the engine like would come on and the car
seemed like it was lagging to get up to speed then the light comes off when
im not driving highspeeds. P.S. My car didnt pass smog test so i had to do
a few things they gave me a full tune up replaces all spark plugs and one
h2 sensor. i couldn’t do both. too expensive. and it passed after that.
now all theses problems 3 months later and fluids are not low please
help…. its a 96 mazda 626 es automatic.

Hey their Scotty! Your videos are very useful but now I’m in a stump. I
have a vehicle a can’t fix it’s a 2002 Chevy Suburban 5.3 2wd and after a
20-30 min drive it shuts off randomly. No signs of anything or lights. If I
let it sit for 5 min it will start and drive for the next 30 min again.
Replaced the CPS and cleaned the MAF no luck. I might try the Fuel test if
not just use the scanner and record data like you recommended. Thanks!

I have a 2000 Chevy Impala 3.4L V6. It starts and runs fine but every once
in a while it will shut off while I’m at a light or slowly making a turn or
even sometimes as I’m reversing into a parking spot. The engine shuts off
but all other power stays on (lights, radio, anything plugged into the
cigarette lighter, etc.) However the battery indicator light comes on. I
just throw it in neutral and cranks right back up and never usually does it
twice in a row. I’m just wondering why this might be happening. Any
professional idea?

Carlos Araojo says:

My car does all these things but instead of completly dieing. it just jerks

hi, i have a 2002 passat 1.8t and it randomly just shut off on me a few
times this week. once my car shuts off my battery light turns on but i
bought a brand new battery. and it shut off the next morning. sometimes my
epc light will turn on but turns off on its own after i turn off the car
and restart it. i was thinking, it can be the alternator but after seeing
this, it may be the fuel pump? my mom bought this car off of someone and
they said the car worked and ran perfectly fine. but i guess we were duped.
and now were stuck with the car. any idea what may be the problem? maybe an
electrical problem? i don’t have a scan tool. and there isn’t an auto place
where I can take the car that knows anything about volkswagons. other than
the dealership, but thats not an option right now

Brandon J says:

Hi Scootty,

My 2000 Nissan Maxima is stalling or the engine is cutting off after
running between 5 – 10min. This started a few days ago. My engine codes are
as P0100 Mass or Volume flow circuit fault, P1336 Failed crankshaft
position sensor and last P0430 Catalytic system efficiency below threshold
bank 2.

Troubleshooting so far; I prematurely changed the fuel pump before
checking codes. I unplugged the battery after start the car to check
alternator and it work fine. Cold starts is when the engine runs the
longest. When I try to restart the car after it dies in maybe half the time
and then dies again in even shorter time after that…etc to not start or
engine turn over.

Please anything helps Scott Thanks
