When I'm out of sharpies. Because let's face it they don't like contaminates. I usually just grab my box cutter as it makes an excellent scribing tool. It's always around, easy to handle and apply plenty of pressure for clear lines and utility blades are inexpensive, durable, double tipped and come in packs of 100.
