Thats the same problem I ran into! The other metal pipe (not the thermal
housing) that thing was stuck n I couldn’t get it loose. . But I finally
did n like u said I was careful cuz I didnt wanted to brake anything . I
wiggled it gently n the house came off …Thank you sooooooooooo much for
the tips =) YOUR THE MAN !!!

Wow I’m not sure if I am encouraged by your apparent perseverance in what
looks like a royal pain in the ass to swap out the thermostat or
discouraged by what I am going to have to go through very soon too replace
my leaking valve cover gasket. Way to remain calm. Thanks for the vid.

If you just doing your valve cover gasket dont sweat it. There are several
things you have have to remove but it is no where near as bad as the temp
sensor and thermostat. Give your self alot of time so you can take you time
and you should have no problems. Good luck and thanks for watching

2LateIWon says:

Awesome Since your in there replace the temp sensor (its on the back side
of the block) After I changed the thermostat I had to go back in and change
the sensor.

2LateIWon says:

ewww good luck with that!!

i am currently replacing the head gaskets on my 03 cts. not fun.

Francisco Betancourt says:

Great Video and thanks this helps out a lot. Do you have to remove the
lower intake manifold to get to the thermostat or could you squeeze it out
without having to remove the lower manifold. Ive got the same issue P0128
Thermostat stuck open. Also I know my valve cover gasket does leak when it
gets to -10C and below so I figure I might as well get those done too. Any
way this can be done without having to remove the lower manifold? Thanks!

2LateIWon says:

Good to know thanks. Mine has been off since the temp outside has warmed up
and hasnt been back on but when it gets cooler again and it if it come on
I’ll look into this. Thanks for the info

F1OffShore says:

I have a mint condition 03 CTS with the 3.2L. I had the P0128 code on just
after I bought it. Dealer said had to replace the thermostat. However,
former owner already had it done, including new temp sensor. ( I bought it
private sale) I finally had time to hook my laptop up to the car and run
some scenarios. Turns out the low speed fan relay was the cause. It would
stick closed, causing the engine not to come up to temp. Replaced it, and
now the engine comes into the heat range that it should.

First I’ll say it is a pain to get out. A lot of finessing. I had to tilt
it and twist it at the same time. I kinda loosely giggled it and it finally
came out. Just be careful because the main reason the thermo breaks is a
piece of the housing breaks off. Just be careful that the piece that broke
off doesn’t go down into the coolant passage. (not good for your water pump
LOL) The problem I had was getting the pass through tube out. I couldn’t
get it out. Good luck

2LateIWon says:

yeah the bad thing is I think if its going to leak its going to leak where
that pipe connects to the thermostat housing. Still hadn’t been able to get
it running yet. I went to put the radator drain plug back in and broke it
(brass fitting oops) and cant find a replacement plug anywhere. Tried all
the local auto stores tired lowes home depot called cadillac (they said its
an aftermarket radiator) So Im stuck and cant get any farther till I get
this fixed to see if my other fixes worked or not

2LateIWon says:

Unfortunately no there is no way around it you have to remove it. I dont
remember if I went over it in the vid or not but what helped was unplugging
the injectors on the drives side. That allowed me to tilt is more and bring
it up and out. Good luck!!!

GABRIEL GOD says:

You have to pull down the front to get that pipe out

EdzGarage says:

I hate when parts don’t come out and are pinned in.

Frankyjs24 says:

How did u manage to get the thermo out? Cuz I cant do it. Ive been
wiggleling it around n it wont come out? Your help is much appreciated.

2LateIWon says:

Oh yeah I forgot about how big of a pain that was. I wrestled with that for
awhile. Only thing is once I got it disconnected from the extension piece.
I couldn’t pull out the extension. So I cleaned that piece as good as I
could an RTV’ed it. So far no issues with it leaking. Glad this vid helped.
