Bad Transmission Lockup TCS Solenoid On Buick

Bad Transmission Lockup TCS Solenoid On Buick

I knew eventually it was going to go bad oh well. I just unplugged it, and the car drives fine. Should be an easy fix.

same thing that has plagued me for a while

jeremy yeoman says:

my car shutters like that at stops or some start ups. It shutters when
under load. If I accelerate hard it will feel like the power is cutting
out. I did this at 70ish the other day and the service engine soon flashed
for a min. then quit. You have given me some hope that its not major money
to fix. Thank you.

WhoSaidTyler says:

Interesting video Craig. One small correction…the actual name is Torque
Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. A more pressing reason to replace that
sooner than later is that transmissions actually run cooler when the
converter is locked up, because less slippage= less heat. I doubt it would
kill it but you might put it on the top of your to-do list.

craig1974 says:

@Needmorehorsepower Yes hopefully i will make a video of me changing it.
The solenoid is held on by a Torx screw which i gotta find out the size of.
I wish it was a Phillips head lol. Come to think of it i saw a Ciera at the
junkyard this week, and i should of checked the tires on it. Its hard to
find good used tires, but since the 75 series tires are not much in use
anymore i should have a better shot at finding decent ones.

ranger135xp says:

can you please let me know where to find the parts. I have the same engine
and problem but have not been able to find the parts under any category or
name search. Help would be appreciated thank you!

craig1974 says:

this only applies to 3 speed front wheel drives

craig1974 says:

@ncrdisabled nope. it was the closest place after the light

dan ny says:

do the filter too

craig1974 says:

@500passwords thanks 500

craig1974 says:

im unfamiliar with that type of century, so i dont know

Needmorehorsepower says:

nice work craig,99% of people dont know that, make sure you do a video when
you change it,check junk yards for tires i buy like new tires for 20 to 25
bucks lot of times i get 4 matching other wise as long as you keep the 2 on
the back the same and the 2 on the front the same you can use 2 different
brands if you want

craig1974 says:

Why buy used? Most auto parts places sell them for less than 30 dollars.

clubcar98 says:

Its a good old GM, slap the new part in and it will continue to run
forever! Your lucky that its easy to get to and does not have that mount in
the way.

mbyr31 says:

That same problem happened in my ’86 Cavailer.

heartrobot351 says:

hey man , thanks for the info, now here is my question,i have a 94 cavalier
2.8 , and the selonoid is inside the lil pan there, and yes there is a
trans mount around it, but my question is, if i disconnect the wires, will
it solve the problem, i mean just for now, ===??

lhopkins2009 says:

Thanks for the tip. Maybe you can help me out . I’ve got a 98′ buick
century 3.1 engine and it tends to shut off while I’m driving but it starts
back up. I’ve changed the mass air flow sensor , changed the fuel filter
and did a professional fuel injection clean I don’t know what to do.

Ifyouclickmeyousuck says:

Does the battery have to be disconnected to just pull the plug?

EdzGarage says:

I had an 87 Z-24 with a 2.8l that did the same thing. Mine was under
warranty so the dealer fixed it and it never failed after that. You could
just put a switch in the dash and turn it on and off. 26 dollars is pretty
good though.

gmcnewlook says:

hmm my sisters old grand am shook at lot (more so at high speed) wonder if
thats related

TheAngryman48 says:

I have a buick park avenue… And i replaced the starter and battery but it
still does not crank up… I have taken the belt off to see whats not
spinning but that does not help…

frankie2234 says:

really good info. the car: a mystery beast

craig1974 says:

@clubcar98 In august it will be going on 10 years i owned that car. I
bought it when i was 26 years old with 39,000 miles on it. The car was nice
back then.

HUSHKUSHDRO says:

So what do I gotta do?

tbird30 says:

I had to do the same thing on an old Cavalier. I lost about 2 mpg on the
highway.

Rob Close says:

is that the 4T60?

727JeffN says:

I had a ’93 Century with the 3300, and overdrive transmission, and didn’t
have any problems with the tranny in the 2 years I had the car. I also had
an ’88 Century with a 3.8, and overdrive transmission, and no problems with
that tranny either. Had it for 7 years. That car was a womped out junker by
the time I was done with it, but it still ran and drove great, with almost
300,000 miles on it!

heartrobot351 says:

hey thanks for answering, well i disconected, and then no check engine
lights comes on, i drove it for about 30miles. and then it worked just
fine, plus i only drove that much just to see of it works, because it would
start acting up after driving it for about 30min or so, i guess once the
temperature would rise and then i would turn it off wait 5min or so and
then i would work fine, i do more city drive and i havent seen no change in
my fuel economy, and i do have the same trans as you the 3sp

HUSHKUSHDRO says:

Where will that switch be at on a 84 delta 88 307 5.0l

craig1974 says:

@WhoSaidTyler I know its called a TCC solenoid, but i just use the
nicknames instead. At auto parts stores its listed as a TCS solenoid. Alot
of people usually just left the solenoids unplugged, and drove for miles
with the transmission unaffected, but im replacing it so my highway mileage
wont go down.

craig1974 says:

@heartrobot351 It may solve the problem for now, but your fuel economy may
suffer. You might find that at certain speeds the check engine may flash,
but its not a life threatening thing.
