Come along and check out this blast from the past. A 2001 Buick Century with the big 3.1 liter. The customer complaint was a squeaking belt. It didn’t take long to find out the vehicle needed more than just a belt

If a 3.1 and 3.8 use the same balancer, I have one to sell. Brand new but it didn't fix my problem, so it is still in the box.
Oh. That's the way youre supposed to do it … I just been welding them up solid… oh well.
Wonder where he learned all this stuff. Who’s his Yoda?
South Main,North Main, Main Main, this is THE Main Auto Channel, always a pleasure to come back, you're the Main lol
So, did you get the job for the CV and subframe?
Never saw that on the 31/3400/s it was a bad problem on the 3800's that had the crank reluctor made to the damper . It would always throw a crank cam correlation code .
In 2043, we'll watch the next video when this car comes back for another harmonic balancer and belt change!
20 years ago i was a new mechanic. had one of these vehicles in the bay. I Had just bought a new padded handle 1/4 drive snap on ratchet on truck credit for way too much money. had placed it on the right hand fender wile engine was idling. it rattled a bit and fell into the engine bay as I watched in horror hesitant to try to catch it as it was on a path into the accessory drive. the bulky ratchet handle landed on the serp belt between AC comp and balancer and was instantly sucked by the belt into the spinning balancer. wile cringing and mumbling “shit” there was a bang and the motor stopped as if it had a race clutch that had been side steeped wile idling. the ratchet handle slammed the tensioner full lock as it went between belt and balancer getting maybe 2” into the rotation. it remained there and to my surprise did not even throw the belt out of a single grove anywhere. belt was guitar string tight and it took some effort with a breaker bar to turn crank backwards to free my prized new snap on tool free. there was slight damage to the belt and i think i replaced it. I still have the ratchet to this day with the original handle grip and it’s scar from the balancer having bitten it. I left auto repair 4 years ago. every time i reach for that tool i have a strong memory of it happening. never told this story before. i was not noticed having made this mistake and kept it from others in shop including my boss at the time as i was super embarrassed.
Eric what size is balancer bolt on 06 Pontiac grand prix base model v6 series 3
the wreckers yard for the missing engine guard ? … might I suggest it's an important part to keep stones / grit / water / mud … etc from the belts and pulleys … or can you pinch the one from the other side of the engine
When I was younger, I joined an a cappella group called the "Harmonic Balancers"…..
Eric great video as usual. Incredible resolution on the camera especially noted when you fired up the Buick after the repair. Nice !!
It leaks? Whatever fluid is leaking it isn't out of yet, right?! I enjoy your common sense approach to automotive diagnosis.
Why did Eric put sealant on the bolt? I would have thought that it is a blind threaded hole.
GM Engineers: Hey, let's make them work through the wheelwell on all of these cars with the 3.x engines!
