Well done! and yes, the battery on E36 with 6 cylinder is in the trunk, but
for E36 with 4 cylinder is in the front.

That thing. The pulley that moves is called a tensioner.

The M3 is slightly different as the idler and tensioner are in different
spots, however, the concept is pretty much exactly the same. Be sure to
make a quick sketch of your serpentine belt routing before disconnecting
everything.

Might be. I didn’t look into it because I had to replace mine before my car
left me stranded; however, the rebuilt alternators are quite expensive and
often have a few complications with fitment.
