Hi paul, great video.
Feeling disheartened at the moment and wondered what you thought!!
Ive got 2003 (53) 318i m sport that I absolutely love. Unfortunately it has
got issues!! Firstly it does make a noise like over reving for a split
second on start up, but I have no smoke at all at that time, and from what
I can tell no smoke driving along! No smoke on tick over either!! But when
stuck in traffic for a bit on pull off I leave a big puff of white/blue
smoke behind and its really annoying that the couple of places ive taken it
to seem to have no idea and no way of testing what it could be, ie ccv,
stem seals, or even more severe, rings!! Would love to hear what you think.
Thanks
Paul

Thanks very much for your response paul, well chuffed….
Thanks for your advice, just need to find a respectable garage for this
kind of job!!
Would you rule out the ccv breather or just do it anyway to eliminate??
Obviously its the cheaper job!! Anyway of testing the breather??
Thanks again
Paul

Hi Paul, Really good video, thanks.
I have the same engine (318i 2002) which has only done 71k and been
regularly serviced. It had an oil leak from the sump which I had repaired
(new gasket + oil change – 5W/30).
Ever since then I have had the intermittent ‘diesel’ rattle on startup
which can last up to 30 secs or not happen at all. The garage said this
sometimes happens after an oil change!
Also at idle it started to intermittently vary revs and stall as well as
sluggish acceleration below 2500 rpm.
I fitted the new modified change tensioner bolt in case it was that (read
that the old one is weak and can sometimes cause a rattle) but it is no
different.
Could the oil separator have got blocked when the old oil was drained and
be causing the problem?
I took it to a BMW specialist who checked timing, sensors etc but ending up
telling me it has low oil pressure and it would be cheaper to replace the
engine!!
Can an engine flush clear it or do you have to replace it?
Your advice would be much appreciated.

aussie aussie aussie !!
hey Paul.. what a heap of junk these engines are hey, my vanos (EX) side
slipped, threw the cam out a smidgen, car would not start.. had to buy that
timing tool , re time it all and start it again.

there was no sludge in my engine, pop the rocker cover off, full of white
milky creamy sludge, and so is the vent pipe near the fuel rails.. would
this be the ccv packin it in?

Excellent video Paul – thanks very much for making the effort to film and
post this video. It’s great to see a video for a four cylinder BMW – in
right-hand drive! Most BMW information videos are from the USA (six
cylinder only and left-hand drive).

After replacing the engine oil sump gasket, my wife’s 2002 318i was running
like a diesel engine, with a loss of power and high oil consumption. There
was also a “lean” fault code from the engine diagnosis.

After seeing these symptoms described in your video, I replaced the CCV
valve and hoses. Now her car runs like a dream!!!

I saved probably over $1000 in labour cost by doing this job myself at
home.

mareks says:

Do you know if this n42 engine has an ICV?

Luke Oakley says:

Did it cause blue/grey smoke when cold? But when reached normal temp all
clear?

Whelan James says:

hey I have the exact same car as you and I’ve been looking everywhere for
the oil separator. can you give me a link to where you bought yours. thank
you

Brad Salem says:

hello,i have a 2004 e46 318i.It is blowing blue smoke when i take off and
when its revved, normal driving is fine just when take off. I have noticed
that i loose about 2Ltr of oil per 1000km, it also spits out water when i
first turn it on in the morning.
It does not leak oil at all. It has been checked by my mechanic and there
are no cracked gaskets.Would you suggest that this is the part that needs
replacing? If so i will be doing it myself following your video. It does
not rattle dramatically like yours does in this vid, but it does vibrate a
little through the steering wheel and the drivers seat.Your advice would be
appreciated.

mareks says:

just noticed in your description… my car does start with rattle like a
diesel noise when cold, but than it disappears straight away..

Krystek B says:

Hi I have same engine and my car smoke when is cold, and need top up oil
every week I using car quiet lot is that oil separator fault ? And starts
every time, but sametimes when starts make noise like diesel car just for
few second, and another thing only happen after long trip when I start the
engine has very low rpm sound like something block him and I just add more
gas and its fine I don’t know what to do change whole engine? Any ideas ? I
be very very happy if you reply. Anyway super video I watch all parts and
I’m sure I be able to do that on my own. Thank you

Fuck dis * hahahah :)

mareks says:

P.S. I have uploaded video, you can have a look what it looks like… revs
never goes up just down when idle..

mareks says:

Hello Paul, seems pretty tough job to do ;/
I have a problem with revs dropping when idle, I have inspected for air
leaks, cleaned MAF sensor, changed coils, spark plugs and VCG, it seemed to
be OK for a day or 2 but than again same problem, revs just dropping down
could it be CCV ?
