Good vid with a couple of new ideas.
To get a bearing race out or off, if one has access to a stick welder,
heating up the race in one spot to red hot by welding a short bead of metal
onto it with your electrode (welding rod) will expand or contract the race
so as to make its removal easy. I don’t bother with an acetylene torch.
(Not enough concentrated heat in one place.)
.
Thanks for putting in the time to do this. Now I have to.
ED, Im going to tackle this myself soon, but im curious to know where you
got the washer big enough to cover bearing? thanks
Hi Ed, I pressed the bearing in, and then the hub, I used never seize,
The hub spins nice and smooth but it has some play, I can move it
Side to side a bit. And it’s pressed all the way in. This is without the
axel
And axel nut installed. Is this normal, will the axel and nut sinch it down,
The washer I used to press the bearing in was not big enough to cover the
outer edge of the bearing?
Hello, Great video, where did you get the tool you use at 5:28 ?
I can’t find one like that anywhere
Thought I’d learn how they do this and what too expect. Too much labor cost
…
Hi Ed, No Probs I got it, just tapped it through! and axel is out.
Hi Ed, These are fantastic videos!! don’t stop. i only had to purchase the
E14 and the #30 mil 12point, doing this for the first time. this might seem
silly question but
im at the point where i need to pull the axel but is it the CV clamp that I
remove?
Hi Ed, do you know what size that bearing separator is, ie what range in mm
or inches is it for the BMW rear bearing hub removal
Cheers
ps Love the diy videos
Does that sound only come from the rear?
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
If you don’t have one… you should 😛
If it is for you… don’t do this job.
Probably the same either way.
Well sorry to say the inverted torx is required unless you want to risk
damaging the bolts. A twelve point socket might work, but any auto parts
store should have these torx. Thanks for watching!
Good video, I used a few of your tips to do both of mine over the weekend.
My biggest suggestion is to be careful when you are using the lugs to pull
the hub off. I was pretty lucky, only one lug got ruined. I managed to save
the others. It mushrooms the tips out a bit.
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
That sounds about right time wise… but $120/hr is outrageous!
Thanks for watching!

No special tools ?, he was using all sorts of tools you wouldn’t find in
the average garage.
Well you skipped the most important step, I’m trying to remove the cv axle
shaft from the rear hub and you just bypassed that part. A ball peen hammer
and a drift and my axle is still attached.thanks for nothing.
what should I do if the only the outer wheel bearing ring stayed inside the
trailing arm? I used the slide hammer and it brought the entire wheel
bearing insides out but not the outer metal ring that holds it all
together? Would grinding it down be my only option? (besides replacing the
entire trailing arm)
Thanks for the detailed tutorial, helped me alot with my E87 120d. However,
I’d like point out one thing that the tutorial didn’t mention. That the CV
axle may be very, VERY stuck! I ruined 2 lugnuts and one puller, trying to
get that sucker out but finally some brutal sledgehammering did the trick.
Could be the brakes.
Not sure, but it’s probably pretty close.
Hi Thanks for the answer. I will try it.
Hi Ed. Thanks for the video. I have a question though. I have a 2007 530xi.
Will this work for my car?
Tank you from Norway for good instructions. Have to replace it on my
1-series, think it is about the same tecnic on that car too…. Have a
325xi e46 also with high milages, so I might do the same on that car soon.
270.000km…
Not sure if the 96 is exactly the same but I think it’s very close. Your
axle shaft may be stuck in the hub. This seems to be common. Soak it with
penetrating oil to loosen it up. Good luck with the repair.
Thanks! It’s a 4 inch.
Hi Ed. Im trying to take roter off but it wont come off. It looks like
something is holding it . I have already taken the bolt off
Id be too afraid that the allen wrench would break.
Amigo, ponga el auto a velocidad moderada en autopista recto y apague el
motor y pongalo en neutral o punto muerto.Preste atencion y lo sabra.
Thanks for watching!
If it’s special to you don’t try this job. Nothing in this video is
special and can be bought at your local auto store. Thanks for watching!
