How do we know if the intake cam itself is set so that the end stop
position on the vanos is correct

Jafar Akhmedov says:

Yes those pins where you connected your multimeter. My 4.6 does not have
those 3 pins. So now i think the chain is of little bit, but i jumped the
timing one tooth and still getting that code and moved it back still
getting bank 2 timing over advanced. Dont what to do. Just drive it like
that or what.

Jafar Akhmedov says:

Man this crappy car giving me a gray hair already, did chains and guides
and all that, keep getting timing over advanced bank 2, sick of it, did
everything and keep getting this code, and damn 4.6 does not have those
pins.

Andreh Davoudi says:

hi Dustin well i have 1999 540i m62 and i had problem with guides and
finally broke the whole plastics and mess up the engine any ways after
changing everything even valve jobs and also i forgot to tell u when i open
the vanos i forgot to mark it but i did even change the O rings inside with
special tools make sure its tight and bla bla lol but now im trying to time
the vanos and im trying to see how u do the timing with O meter but no
matter what left or right im hearing the beep from the OHM so i really dont
know what to do now also when im attaching one of the o meter to that small
pin im not getting anything that’s made of plastic so is there any clear
video u have showing where exactly goes the o meter and when u turn right
side is there any beep or when u turn left u hear the beep and when u move
to right the beep is gone please be more specific thanks

dmolish85 says:

I’m getting inconsistent continuity readings when I test. I have used the
special tool and rotated counterclockwise to the hard stop. Sometimes 2 of
the 3 pins have continuity…sometimes I have to wiggle the pin to get any
sort of continuity on one pin. I’m working on the M62 engine from a 2001
X5. Should I be concerned about moving forward? Wondering why in your
video you get such a clear tone and I’m not. I just looked up how much
these things cost to replace…might as well invest in a new motor if mine
are bad. Thank you for your advice in advance.

try duck says:

So this isn’t a video showing timing a 4.4l w/vanos. figured you would show
instead of waste footage talking and pointing…. Kinda like a news person
reading a screen who really isnt doing anything more then reading…Would
have been better video but it is 3 years old , bet someone made a better
one showing how to time as in doing it…

alberto alvarez says:

good explanation dusting thanks

tonyelston1 says:

Hi Dustin you said you got the setup kit for the M62 engine from ebay; if
this is correct can you supply a link or a name to the kit. please. Thanks
for the time and a great informative video

sam al says:

hi If the engine work , This means Good work ?

algharir2525 says:

hey bud, i have a 2000 bmw x5 4.4i e53, timing guide rails broke up , what
do you think cause it, the tensioner? and since I’m in the engine what else
do you think i should replace since it open and how far down do i need to
open up to possible see where broken pieces went and also when i took off
intake, look at the rods there, all of them where closed except the last
one to the right? is that normal and what tools do you think i have to have
for the project, thanks in advanced buddy

Tony Smith says:

hi Dustin I have a Bmw 1 series n45, do you have a video of how to tension
the oil pump chain I have searched on line and haven’t found anything , or
please forward a link if you know of where I can find it many thanks

Dustin Parsons says:

Just looked at a right side 5-8 cam replacement and may have let them slip
while removing old chain. Right now my number 6 exhaust cam is in 8 oclock
position and number 8 intake is in 4 oclock position. Do they both need to
be in a 12 oclock postion.

Shopster Emeritus says:

M62 a primo pc of crap. motor.
who buys that garbage..

Ceelo totheworld says:

Thxs for vid wish u did the seals also since that’s common with this job
and had a before and after sound reference to help diagnose the difference
between guides or seals

Dustin Parsons says:

Just timed my 2002 X5 4.6is Dinan M62tu per the video turned over by hand
before putting valve covers on and met an obstruction. Pulled plugs to
make sure it wasn’t just compression one of the obstructions is about 1/4
turn ccw from TDC. Please Help ready to hear it run again. Thanks Dusty

Ameen alshwaiyat says:

the vanos on both sides , now u mentioned the right side but u never
told us how to do the left side . please reply quick i am working on the
car right now

adnnan ismail says:

The left side camshaft makes noise i opened the covers the left side
camshaft chain is loose but the right side is tight does that caus the
noise ?

Salvador V Frutos says:

Do you still provide with auto repair service? Your website is down by the
way. Thank you!

adnnan ismail says:

Even if i dont change the cam chains ?

adnnan ismail says:

Thanks for the reply , just one more question if i change the main timing
chain and dont open cam shafts or vanos do i still need to reset the vanos
?

adnnan ismail says:

Do i need to do setting on both sides vanos ? If so how turn the other side
please thanks .

EuroEmpire says:

I just replaced my VANOS seals inside the unit, also replaced the chain,
tensioners, and guides.. With the entire VANOS tool set, cams locked A-E
up, and all. Still having a P1519 code.

Amin El Fakieh says:

agree, i will have to change the Vanos as a final step if no results i will
sell it also, its a shame to drive a range rover or BMW with such stupid
noise

claudianieves9 says:

I am wandering if there is a way I to test the Vanos solenoid for proper
functionality. As per I understand, is a check valve that moves in to two
positions Advance and retard to close and open the oil flow to the vanos.
it has to wires connections. Does any one know how to test the basic
operation of it? Any help will be most appreciated Thanks Rick Nieves

MrEuroTrance says:

Hello, thanks for the video. I followed the TIS document for m62tu vanos
replacement and wanted to confirm a few items. 1) are you tightening the
stretch cam bolt to 40, then turning the vanos transmission unit to full
retard and check until it beeps, then you tighten it to full spec? 2) does
it matter what pin out of the 3 you use ? why are there 3 pins ? 3) if the
flywheel is locked to the oil pan with the special tool do you even have to
use the mark on the front timing case? thanks

Sex Toy Jon says:

If you need the tools for this i rent them out,,johnwallworkj@aol.com Great
video..

m540i6 says:

did you get this?

Amin El Fakieh says:

great info indeed, i got an M62 engine on my Range Rover 2004 making a
permanent diesel like noise especially when the oil gets hot. i got a
advise to change the timing chain, guides & tensioners to get rid of the
noise but still it persists. Am checking some videos over here, most of
them are pointing at changing the Vanos or VVT units. Need your expert
advise. Thx in advance

Kimo Lee says:

You may have to cycle it back and forth a few times to remove residual oil
in the vanos. Then hold it counter clockwise with the special tool and
check for continuity.

johnzgarage says:

Great video. I just put giudes on a 1999 540i I bought not running. I put
it all together and it runs great but its throwing 2 codes from the
sensors. The vanos system confused me a little seeing the cams move
independently at times.

gavin7591 says:

I bought the besian vanos repair kit do have any info on pros or cons

Kimo Lee says:

Nice video. I just finished this job today. You can also rent the tools
online too. I got mine for $75 + shipping for 30 days. I had to do my Vanos
timing twice because I got the P0034 and 34 vanos camshaft control OBD
codes after first try.

dustin michael says:

Well, first thing is to reset the adaptation for the vanos, then if that
doesn’t work check out my other video for a secondary check. Its a response
video at the bottom. Thanks

Plisii says:

Hi I have a M5 E39 1999 model, and today I heard a weird noise that I
haven’t heard before. When I stand still and push the gas it starts to tick
when im in 2000rpm to to almost 3000rpm in the rev meter, like some metal
ticking or something thats loose, atleast i think it sounds like that,
dosent really sounds like vanos ticking I think. please I really need your
help if u could give me some advise or if u know what it could be. btw sry
for my english !

My CC company/Bank gave him 45 days to respond to their requests for refund
then when he didn;t they took the $ back from him. I hope people read this

this helps.

gordjs says:

you seem to be familiar with the m62 engine, I have an e39 5 series with
this engine and there seems to be a general lack of knowledge as to why
they can start oil fouling spark plugs? Its not the commonly thought ccv at
the back of intake, do you have any experience with changing or fixing
cyclone oil seperator on bank 2 behind timing chain? Or perhaps know of a
typical hose that pinches or clogs, because my engine is sucking oil and
heavy fouling but its deeper than ccv back of intake…

dustin michael says:

@claudianieves9 The only way I have checked the actuation of the vanos was
thru a scan tool. Usual requirements was an engine up to operating temp and
idling. When activated it would cause the idle to become rough. Outside of
that, I’m not positive that you can supply your own power and ground to
check it. Ill research more and get back to you.

dustin michael says:

@BmKOSWarrior If your vanos unit is going out it could cause a rattle and
an intke cam code. Not to bad to replace those but the timing can be kinda
tricky. That is a S52 engine and is different than the M62 I have on this
video. Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out. If your in the San
Diego region I could look at it for you. Thanks for watching.

loop949 says:

Ive adjusted to the counterclockwise endstop, but still not getting
continuity… Any ideas?

Akhil Woods says:
