A VERY THOROUGH JOB…. Kudos to the HIGHLY SKILLED GENTLEMAN who took the
time to show people how it is DONE.. Excellent Job!

Dave Cloes says:

Thanks for the video. I noticed you put the RTV on the gasket for the half
moons as opposed to the on the head surface. That’s unique from what I’ve
been reading/viewing. Most others suggest putting it on the head surface
and only at the peak of the half moons and only about 1/2″ from the peak
each way (plus at the vanos joints on the head like you do). I’m inclined
to do it your way on my 328is because my VCG wasn’t leaking back there at
all and I saw RTV through the entire half moons when I removed it. Have
you done it placing RTV on the head surface at the half moon peaks only and
found your way is better?

Also, would you recommend Permatex high temp red or Permatex ultra black.
The ultra black specifically says its sensor safe and the red does not.

Again, thank you for the video. Huge help!

Did you need to drain the engine oil out before take off the valve cover?
Thanks.

Ken Brinkman says:

Hey guys, great video but I have a quick question. I’m going to do this on
an N52 and the procedure seems very similar. Do you know if the bolts on
the valve cover are aluminum and need to be replaced or are they ok to be
reused and retorqued?

Rzrt77 says:

Hi,
Would the procedure be the similar for an 06 E83 3.0?

Thanks in advance

Hi. Thank you for this truly informative video. You are going to save me
hundreds of dollars. Do you have a video covering the procedure to
replacement the VANOS seals? I would be very keen if it is available. I
have a 2003 530i. Thank you again.

Can you use an alternate sealant not specific for BMW? Can I use Permatex

is gone ?

boysiy says:

top video BavarianAuto, but when you are taken out the rubber seals for the
spark-plugs it’s better to use a heat gun to soften the seals then thy will
come out easeyer, next time why don’t you try it.

popoften says:

Well, yesterday I was replacing the valve cover hasket on my ’95 BMW 525i
wagon. I made the replacement, and was carfully and gradually torquing down
the VC bolts. On two of them (2nd center bolt from the front of the engine,
and the top side bolt adjacent to the center bolt) the stud snapped long
befoire I got anywhere near the 89 inch-pound torque spec. Undoubtedly my
VC will leak now. What can I do to remedy the situation?

1Ali380 says:

Did this 2 months ago it was easy

Use a mechanic’s stethoscope (with a megaphone end …. like the one we
sell) to try to locate the source of the whistle. You may hve a vacuum leak
someplace in the intake system. The VANOS instructions will be posted on
our tech blog site at blog.bavauto.com in a couple days (working on it
now). Just go to the blog and search VANOS DIY .

BavarianAuto says:

As 18iser noted, the oil will be in the oil pan. No need to drain.

Zymh says:

Thanks for this video, I was going replace my valve cover gasket on my
M52B28 next week, and I only had an idea how I was going to replace it, but
