Regarding the “thin wrench” used to remove the nut securing the inner end
of the tie rod, I used a monkey wrench, aka slip nut wrench, although any
parallel jaw wrench with wide opening will do. To allow the jaws to grip
the narrow flats, I interposed a 1″ length of 1/4″ diameter metal rod
between the flats and the wrench jaws. This gave me the clearance to turn
the wrench. Although I didn’t, I suppose you could tape the metal rods to
the jaws of the wrench.
