►If you have a BMW F30, you probably already understand why it’s important to regularly change the engine air filter.
The engine air filter is responsible for filtering the air that enters the intake before it has a chance to reach the throttle body or turbo. Why is this important? If you have a damaged air filter or no air filter at all, any small dirt, debris, leaves, or other foreign materials brought in through the intake would directly enter your throttle body or turbo and potentially lead to catastrophic failure. If your engine air filter is dirty and clogged up, airflow to the engine would suffer, potentially resulting in poor fuel economy, rough idle, and other symptoms of a “choking” engine.
We recommended that you change out the engine air filter every 30k-40k miles or every tune-up. It’s an easy and inexpensive item to replace that gives you peace of mind and prolongs the life of your engine.

Never ever ever ever….ever put a rag or any material for that matter to cover a pipe to an open system/engine. If you know you will be doing this maintenance soon then find a plastic or rubber plug possibly around the house OR measure the Diameter of the pipe opening and you can buy them online. Do the job correctly. Opening your intake and not doing it right could be the sole reason something detrimental happens to your engine.
While changing, I dropped one of the 3 clips that clips the hood cable to the airbox, and I can’t retrieve from the bottom of the car. Know anywhere I can order a replacement?
Where is the air flow meter vs the mass air sensor? i don't recall seeing you disconnect it
For those talking about short cuts… Don't be lazy, you should clean the damn air box LOL or it defeats the whole purpose of installing a new filter, that initial gust of air into the intake will just blow all that debris and residue into your new filter LOL

Will be changing mine in 09 328i. Mpg has been lowering and driving habits havent changed. Was last changed about 25k ago. I'm a newb so any tips on whether this is an appropriate action and filter choice is appreciated.

What are you talking about I have a regular 328ix not M-Sport and the dealer installed airfilter is WITHOUT the gray additional filter layer.
