Scotty would rather complain about the difficulty of removing #6 coil than doing the easy and recommended thing and remove the cabin air filter housing. Takes 3 minutes tops to do that. It opens the entire rear top of head. My 328i manual is very shade tree mechanic friendly once ya talk to it and listen to it's response. Bims are for those that can just peel off the 100s to pay guys like Scotty or are like Scotty and can work on them themselves. One thing is certain and the reason why I've put my ES330 w/41k on od up for sale,it ain't a BMW and never will be. I want that driving excitement that can only be had with a true "drivers car." Dammit Scotty buy yourself a sports machine. I'll deliver my 94' 300ZX to you. manual trns w tasty mods 15 yr owner 98k ,you want my car.

derk7787 says:

Lol two 8mm bolts, six 8mm screws then undo a few clips and the entire cowl comes off leaving the rear of the engine exposed. People really should simply google how to work on the specific car they are working on. You'll save time and frustration. Noob mistake.

jrcumzxd says:

Hey Scott just wondering how much do you charge for a job like this one? – Tony from Los Angeles

Warren Lange says:

Scotty,
The neighbor has been chasing a random misfire on a 2001 BMW 325, straight 6. He replaced plugs and coils. Any other tricks or areas to look at?
Thanks,
Warren

James Nasium says:

Give the 12-year-old bimmer a break, man. Bad coil is no big deal, especially if you can fix it yourself.

David Farley says:

Meanwhile in reality, every other car manufacturer uses just as much if not more plastic in the engine bay. THIS ISNT 1940 WHERE EVERY CAR IS HANDBUILT AND EVERY PART IS SOLID STEEL, get over it old man. Cars are plastic on the engine bay to create crumple zones so you can walk away from formerly fatal accidents. It's not all about cheaping out. Not to mention no one would be able to afford a car if everything was aluminum and steel. Dude needs to reevaluate his stance on the modern vehicle

Ron Harmsen says:

Aren't all the makes using alot of plastic under the hood?

Dr E says:

Have you tried changing the air filter on a Ford? Quit complaining just admit how easy that was..

TMike Wingman says:

Wonder if Germans complain as much about American cars? Or if the only cars they like are Japanese?

Shoudday Cha says:

Just imagine if the Nazi decided to made their Panzer and Tiger tanks in plastic.

Dan Gleason says:

"no working room…"
"did I mention, no working room…"
"still no working room…"

EHHRider94 says:

LMAOOO anyone who's ever worked on a bmw knows take off the COWL and CABIN filter FIRST… magically within 1 minute you have access to the entire top of the engine and can even stick your hand straight down the back of the motor hahaha

Agreed they are expensive to maintain, but you get what you pay for with those N54's especially!

Henry Thoreau says:

Wow. My old BMW is built like a tank compared to that POS. What year did they start replacing the engine components with plastic? My IC's are heavy metal bolt in plugs.

N M says:

As a first time BMW owner, I started to hate the damn plastic everywhere

Lili Z says:

Too much plastic in this car, what a piece of crap.

James Plotkin says:

For it's age, that was a really clean engine compartment.

Ecchi Oni says:

Scotty, you could've taken the cabin air filter assembly off to get some working room.

Yo Mama says:

Every manufacturer uses plastic covers nowadays, even the cheap American models have them! Scotty picks on BMW like they're the only one that uses plastic…lol

Ijnat says:

BMW with an engine light? Welp time to get rid of it and get a toyota.

Michael T says:

You are supposed to remove the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield, that uncovers the back cylinders. And yes it is more black plastic

tom nickerson says:

Parts for a BMW are ridiculously expensive. I always loved the look of the old 840 & 850 but the maintenance costs and cost of parts has always brought me to my senses.
