Yes, in fact, I have a video showing how to flush the old coolant out and replace it with new one without draining the old coolant out from the block engine.
I will upload it on YouTube tonight.
When it is ready, I will create the link below “Show more” in description of my video above.
Thanks for watching my video.
Is there a way to take it all out and add new like an oil change?
BMW uses a pressurized cooling system. By bleeding the air out, you ensure that it is full and has no air in the system. When full and with no air, it is even harder to freeze. Hence the cold in Germany. So the art to filling it is to fill, bleed, fill bleed, until coolant is coming through the bleed screw. Then close it off and you are done. Invest in a metal bleed screw also…..The plastic ones break off after a while. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Great video Han.
Whenever you add the coolant in, the chance is that you will have the air entering the coolant system even slowly pouring in. Therefore we have to bleed air out to make sure the coolant compress at the high temperature (normal operated temp) is operated at the most efficient way to cool off the BMW engine, which is very high compression engine.
why bleed out the coolant after adding it ? im having an issue with my coolant tank on my e46 also
The sensor is called Level Switch and costs $17.42.
Good luck
ok thanks for your help how much are the sensors
I agree. That rubbish green prestone coolant will cause serious damage to the engine. With a small risk of the engine shooting pistons out of the hood, exploding in a huge fire ball setting the world on fire. The shockwave will set the milky way out it’s course, crashing into Andromeda, 2.5 million light-years from earth.
Your coolant might have air pockets in the system. Try to bleed them out. It might help. If not, you have to replace the coolant sensor underneath of the expansion tank.
My coolant light comes on and off i have no leaks and level is ok i have also replaced top hose and top of expansion tank. Has anyone had this on there’s if so what did you have to replace. Thanks
Thanks this video helped a lot if you can upload more videos on how to fix certain thinks on a BMW 2000 323i it would be awesome
As I stated, an E-39 uses a coolant that is blue, and can only be purchased from the dealer. putting the wrong fluid in a car is not indicative of a mechanic dispensing sound or reputable advice.
Maby different manufacturers use different colors? My coolant is red and is long life ethylene based.
Not willing to listen to a guy who is using the wrong coolant. BMW’s use a coolant that is blue in color. Never use regular Prestone in a BMW!.
Thank you for your compliment.
You have a nice day ahead.
Explanation short & sharp, easy to understand. Double thumbs up to you.. Thank you very much
Yes, the car needs to keep running during bleeding.
Thanks for watching my video.
Hello . Does the car need to still be running during the bleed process ? Thanks
I am positively sure this method will be the best to bleed all air pockets out of the coolant system.
Thanks for watching the video.
I will try this method in the morning 🙂 Thanks!
pressure hose ? Oh hell no ! this aint no toyota amigo :p
BMW coolants is basically pentosin NF aka G48. its used by many European auto makers and Volvo. BMW coolant also contains 2EHA.
Hi Javier,
Your method is the best when you need to add coolant after replacing the upper hose or expansion tank.
When replacing the water pump or thermostat, the huge amount of air will get into the engine block contained about 2 gallons, then you need to pour about one gallon to push the air bubbles from engine block out to bleeding hole.
Thought, it depends on each case to determine the best way to bleed the air pockets out of coolant system.
Thank you for your introducing a new method.
the method that worked for me best. when the car is cold elevate the front end of the car. turn the key to the number 2 position with out turning on the car. turn the heater on to 90 and the blower to the slow speed. open the bleeding screw and poor down the 50/50 mix until it came out of the bleeding hole. Poor the mix until you see the air bubbles disappear. you will notice the water over flowing from the hole in a smother way. did that one time and worked perfect and my car didn’t over heat.
Hi i tried the method on my 2000 323ci and had a few problems with it. by doing this method my car would still over heat even after I bleed the system like 4 times. not only that by running the car a few miles and trying to bleed it. I had problems with the bleeding screw yes it heats up and the screw broke in half. had to buy a new hose. I was getting frustrated thinking i had a blown head gasket. so I tried another method that was easier and finally worked saving me 1200 to rebuild the head.
– It’s just for convenience. Some people live in areas where BMW dealers are far away. Preston is everywhere in U.S Walmart.
– The video modified the Bentley manual. First, when filling the coolant, the blower was set to min speed to open the passage between Coolant System and heater core, the min speed is to conserver the battery because engine was off. When bleeding, the car is running, the blower needs to set to max speed to speed up the process of expel air packets out quickly
BMW coolant cost under $30, and you normally don’t need to change every two years. Why would risk using Preston?
Bentley manual says turn up AC to max warm, and AC blower to min level. That is why to expel air packets in manual.
– Prestone has been used for a long time instead of BMW coolant. The result has been proved from many BMW in US.
– This method is derived from Benley book and works in many BMW. In fact, this is the best way to push air pockets out of BMW coolant system where expansion tank built right on the line of coolant path, it is not isolated outside the path and sucks coolant as needed into the system. If the air pockets still trap into the system, pressure will build up and bust it prematurely.
Honestly, this is a terrible DIY video. Two major concerns
– BMW coolant should be used
– The way of extract air packets are not following the manual
I would never risk my car by doing so.
Its good video but the oem books shows you a much easier technique and you never turn car on to bleed properly.so easy following book procedure
Remember, do not spray a pressure hose near the EDK (throttle unit), it doesn’t have good insulation; water will enter into the module and cause the car going to limbo mode. Eventually, over $1,200.00 needs to pay for EDK and Engine Wiring Harness.
Only underneath and on the front between the fan blades and radiator are good place to clean with a pressure hose. Other areas near the EDK can be clean by hand with degrease can from Walmart.
You need to look underneath of the car to spot the leak coming from. Wash the bottom of engine with pressure hose from car wash and drive for a while and look it under the engine. If you have slowly leak, it will be hard to detect unless you put the dye (UV dye) and drive for whil then look underneath the engine.
E46 is lousy coolant system, so many hoses, housings, and connectors make coolant losing after 60,000 miles.
It could be water pump, cylinder head, and mostly the expansion tank.
what if you dont see the coolant form the bleed hole ,when you fill it up because my bmw has been leaking for a while now but it only leaks when i drive it do you thank you might know the problem i took it to the shope alot they keep saying its the hose but when i pop open the coolant cap after a drive its hafe way empty
Yes, I’m from there.
Thanks for comment
Paulvu66, why is prestone 50/50 disastrous in BMW?
First off, I think you and I come from the same motherland. Second, your advice on running the car for a few miles is really out there, Mr. Otto from Bavauto would be in disbelief. The moment the engine is started, the air are being pushed out by water pump as my e39 did. Then I continued to fill while watching the temp. gauge, which is very critical. Third, your advice on flushing coolant every couple years to ensure no overheating is preposterous. Lastly, Non-BMW coolant is a disaster.
You can use the pre-mixed “Prestone Antifreeze/Coolant, 50/50” from Walmart or Autozone. It is easy for you and it just costs roughly $1.00 more than the concentrated Prestone with which you have to add 50% of distilled water for ideal mixing of 50/50 solution. The “Prestone Antifreeze/Coolant, 50/50” is the yellow one gallon bottle. You will not be able to miss it, the bright yellow bottle with “50/50” word on it. You might need two gallons (2 bottles pre-mixed 50/50).
It is worth of time to change the antifreeze from the radiator unless you have changed it within a year.
The coolant needs to drain and replace with 50/50 pre-mixed Prestone for every 2 years to ensure your engine not being over-heat. It also prevents all the passages in the coolant system from corroding and clogging.
Thank you for your time to watch my video
Thank you
Very good
Thanks for the reply, Can I use longlife premixed coolant to replace my coolant or do I have to use 50/50 mixed between antifreeze and distilled water.
I am changing the expansion tank so just wondering should I need to drain the water from the radiator
