Few things worth mentioning: impeler is made of plasic and could be cracked
any time. New one is costy:) there is a special stopping tool for the visco
clutch removal, but hammering the wrench could do the job too.

And impeller-clutch part, if water pump is old-it may cause impeller to to
play and touch shields and rad on high rpms. Reason of that is bearing in
hte water pump.

Redneck Garage says:

MY local BMW dealership is advertising a brake fluid change for $119.95 and
for a mere 149.95 they will put in new antifreeze ( no tstat tho) Oil
change – $95.00 …. Soon they will be replacing the tire winter air with
summer air for I’m sure a low low price too 🙂

Erick Erickonphoenix says:

Hahaha Yeah that alternator was a bitch that needs to get hammered. But
turned out a large flathead screwdriver did the job. Pretty cool you did it
without removing the whole filter housing which I did. Still haven’t gotten
to the ATF fluid and filter change but when I do I will have your vid on
the ipad next to me

F1R3STORM17 says:

Ugh I should have done this when I changed my alternator, or idler pulley.
Jesus Christ I hate taking all that shit apart. I’m gonna have to do it
again when I do the rest of my pullies… shoot me now.

Fnando S says:

im doing mine this week. got my beer already in prep for the job lol

HowTo702 says:

I need to do this job. Doesn’t look like fun. Thanks for the video!

Elliott TheFilmmaker says:

Thanks for the post(s), and all the instructional videos!!! You don’t know
how many THOUSANDS of dollars you are saving the typical home mechanic vs.
taking issues to a regular BMW mechanic.
THANKS!!!

Erik Cruz says:

Where can you buy that oil filter gasket? any good websites?

Kj Matt says:

do you have to drain the oil out to do this job?

Max parks says:

Hey I am a big fan of all of your videos. I wanted to know if your
experiencing any symptoms before you did this job? I think I might have the
same problem…

frankv2k says:

Truly love your vids especially this one. You are right on with the lower
alt bolt and fan. Pissed me off big time. I threw $h!t all over my garage.

dchujr says:

This guy is effin awesome eh?

bigdaddyho19 says:

Good job .I rather not fuck with the fan tho .I leave that bitch on.

pedro nunes says:

how to install rear lights in LED (m3 style) in bmw e46 2004?

luigiZHP says:

Very helpful, thanks. I like that you were able to simply pull the housing
in half and didn’t need to deal with removing the power steering pump.
Time saver!

gneesh14 says:

The lower alternator bolt is a pain to put back in! I found that when you
remove the alternator, the lower bolt hole mating surface is shiny due to
where it mates up with the oil filter housing. So I would tap it down
SLOWLY with a mallet until I could no longer see the shiny mating surface-
it was then lined up. Saved me a ton of time.

Elliott TheFilmmaker says:

I will probably want to perform this job too. Im sure it is only my valve
cover gasket, as it burns off oil towards the right back of the engine
block, off the exhaust manifold. However, from what I have read, the oil
filter gasket is usually common as well.

darreng34 says:

Great video. I had a problem with tightening the 6 bolts. Yes, you guessed
it, I over tightened one of the bolts. I went past the 20nm because I did
not hear the click from the torque wrench. At that low torque setting the
click is very slight.
In the end it was not a problem, the bolt came out LUCKILY! It had almost
snapped in half but I was able to order another bolt from BMW. If it had
sheared off I would have been in trouble.
To anyone else trying this job, take your time and do not over tighten the
bolts. 20nm is not much at all!

My next job is the control arm bushings!

bman bman says:

What was worse the CCV replacement or the oil Filter gasket? Both jobs look
like they suck ass, I got to do both ! Love my E46…. Should I try and do
both @ the same time?

jefftc14 says:

I 100% know what you mean with that fucking fan… the number of times I
have been leaning over my fucking engine bay with my back killing me while
I try to spin that fucker back on… OMG….

also that alternator was the biggest fucking bitch for me when I did
this… I was sweating and cussing sooo much… it wouldn’t go back on
straight and it’s gotta be cosmically aligned just to go on and then have
that bottom bolt go thru… I live in North Carolina and was doing it out
side last summer. ugh… so glad that’s over..

jefftc14 says:

I cleaned everything while I was down there though.. like fucking
everything.. kind of had to because I had power steering fluid leaking
everywhere which I was doing as well at the time… went crazy on all the
electrical connections and stuff.. rebent connections for better contact,
etc. car ran much more solid after. I had to turn an annoying gasket job
into something better hahaha.

Dennis Canon says:

Do you have to drain the oil to do this job?
